The Dark World is one of the 12 original locations accessible directly from The Nexus.
It is an extremely dark, openly-looping world that is difficult to see without using the Lamp effect to light it up. Doing so reveals the intricate floor patterns that can be used to navigate. The patterns on the floor mostly resemble designs of Aztec or African masks.
Points of Interest
- This world is very dark, so it is difficult to see characters or objects without using the Lamp effect.
- The Knife effect can be found here. It is picked up off the ground between the two floor patterns that look like hands.
- There are 3 Pissipissini that roam this world. They are barely visible in the darkness.
- The Following Ghost is also found here. Unlike the other ghosts, it does not give any effects, but will follow Madotsuki erratically if he sees her.
Interpretations
If the worlds in Yume Nikki are intended to be representative Madotsuki's thoughts, feelings and memories, then the Dark World would be the representation of a more 'darker' side to Madotsuki's personality. In addition to being literally dark, the fact that the knife rests here links the theory of Madotsuki possibly being violent or a murderer, and that this world reflects her remorse or being guilty; the darkness may point towards Madotsuki's intention to conceal or hide her guilt and misery. Perhaps the ghost "haunts" Madotsuki rather than follow her. The ghost and the Pissipissini may represent the souls of people she has killed and their presence there may suggest an everlasting guilt. The fact that the Pissipissini cannot be stabbed by the knife reinforces this.
It may also be notable that the Dark World is one of main worlds - the 'original locations' - which suggests that Madotsuki's 'dark side' is more central to her personality than, for example, the yearning to be free hinted of by the event that takes place on Mall rooftop, a deeper location.
