*Onsen-san may be based on the akaname of Japanese mythology. While they are normally depicted as human-like creatures with long hair, they share Onsen-san's trait of residing in dark places, especially bathhouses. Akaname are also known for their red color and long tongue, the latter of which is used to lap up the filth of bathhouses.
