Soutarou's Room is where the player starts (and ends) the game. This room and its balcony are the only locations Soutarou can access outside of his dreams.

Features

Soutarou's Room is a dreary living room situated in an apartment building where Soutarou resides. Soutarou refuses to leave his room through the door, and attempting to open it results in him shaking his head. However, if the player has collected all effects and has met certain conditions the endings can be triggered by interacting with the door.

There are various furnishings in the room, such as a table with a tissue box, a cup and a teabag on top, throw pillows, a night stand, a trash can, and a couch serving as the connection to the dream world. There is also a desk with a lamp and a rolling chair on the bottom right corner of the room. A Document can be found on the desk, which allows the player to save their progress. While Soutarou is awake, a Portable Console can be found in his inventory which allows him to play the TA_BE_ minigame.

Exiting from the sliding doors will take the player to Soutarou's Balcony, a small area that showcases the bleak apartment complex Soutarou resides in. There's not much of interest with the exception that it may change from day to night. Some of the Endings take place here.

Going to sleep on the couch will usually take the player to Soutarou's Dream Balcony. However:

  • There is a 1/365 chance - as long as the player hasn't acquired the Chains effect - that instead of being taken to the Dream Balcony, Soutarou will instead be taken to the Scarecrow Doll Void.
  • Alternatively, if the player has acquired the Chains effect, there is a 1/365 chance that the Suppressed Thoughts event will be triggered.
  • Finally, if the player has previously seen the first part of the White Building event in the Old Arcade, waking up and going to sleep afterwards will allow them to see the second part. This part of the event can only be experienced once per savefile.

Soutarou's Dream Room

Soutarou's Dream Room.
Things seem a bit different…

After falling asleep, Soutarou starts in the dream balcony. The dream balcony is visually identical to the real world version, except for the background which is now darker and more abstract. Entering the sliding doors will take the player to Soutarou's Dream Room. Once Soutarou has left this area, it cannot be revisited unless the player starts a new dream session.

The dream room is similar to the real world version with a few minor differences. Notably, it is much tidier - the trash can is empty, the throw pillows are no longer to be seen on the floor and the table is empty. Aside from those, a device is now present on the night stand which may light up and start ringing randomly. Interacting with it while it's in that state will trigger the Hazy Memory event.

Here, you can still sit in the rolling chair. By interacting with the desk (facing down in the chair), it can be equipped like an effect, letting Soutarou move around while seated at a faster speed than walking. However, he can not get off the chair until it is returned to the desk. Another disadvantage to using the chair as a speed effect is that the player is unable to enter some areas and interact with certain NPCs.

Sleeping in the couch here has a 1/10 chance of taking the player to the Dream In Dream.

Finally, the most notable of all the differences is that the door to exit his room can now be opened, allowing the player to enter the Nexus and explore the dream world.

Scarecrow Doll Void

The Scarecrow Doll Void is a small dark area accessible from the couch in Soutarou's Room. As the name suggests, this area is empty save for the scarecrow dolls that surround Soutarou. The tiles in this area are not walkable, except for a few of them, so the player can only see a small part of it. However, there are no other points of interest as the rest of the map consists of the same dolls arranged in rows. The only way to exit this area is by using the Pattern effect or waking up.

Trivia

  • Soutarou will make a confused expression if the player tries to wake up while already awake.
  • There's a chance that Soutarou will yawn while idling in the real world.
  • Idling in the real world also has a chance of increasing or decreasing Soutarou's Mental State variable.
  • The Scarecrow Doll Void area shares a tileset with Red Hand Labyrinth.
