This page lists information on the files and database structure of Yume Nikki. This is a work-in-progress page that aims to include as much information as possible, so it can be used by game modders, theorists, and those simply interested in how the game was made. It translates any Japanese text and identifies the contents or functions of files and database entries. Any differences (or errors) between the original game and a translation are also listed. The two translations included in this are the Uboachan translation and the official English Steam translation.
Notes on data:
- Effect names are from the Uboachan translation.
- Database translations currently use "dwarf" instead of "midget", but this should be fixed sometime.
- NPC names are the ones used on the wiki.
- Translated filenames are used in a (to-be-updated) copy of Yume Nikki Translated, which itself was originally made by Nyrator. Credit goes to Nyrator for all switch, variable, and common event name translations.
- Money is referred to as "money" except when it is literally called "yen".
Notes on style:
- Red cells indicate duplicate entries and there must be info added of which is actually used (or where each is used).
- Grey cells are empty sections of files.
- Normal-colored empty cells indicate unidentified content. These should be filled in sometime.
- Cells with three question marks ??? indicate uncertainty, and should be reviewed.
- Database separators are in italics to identify that they have no actual game function.

Besides the RTP files, there are 4 duplicate picture files in the files of the Steam version, which are all unused:
- Picture #67: BBBBBBBBBB1 is a duplicate of 00000000040
- Picture #143: 000000000000000000000151 is a duplicate of BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB1
- Picture #179: 000180 is a duplicate of 000051
- Picture #181: 000178 is a duplicate of 000050
The translations replace the full width question mark ? with a normal question mark ?, but the translated copy of the game omits the question marks due to it being a forbidden character for file names on Windows.
Sound
System
It is currently unknown whether system #4 is used or not.
Title
Database
Switches
The switch indices go up to 260, but the last one with a name is 253.
In the Steam version, switch #205 is renamed to 000000000000226.
In addition to translating the Japanese text, several changes are made to the translations to make them fit:
- The kanji "初取" ("first take") is abbreviated to "1st".
- The kanji "捨" (discard) is abbreviated to "X".
- The kanji "発動" (activation) is abbreviated to "USE".
- The kanji "使用中" (in use) is abbreviated to "ON" to distinguish it from the previous.
- The block symbol "■" is changed to the at sign "@".
- The star symbol "★" is changed to an asterisk "*".
Variables
The variable indices go up to 260, but the last one with a name is 103.
In addition to translating the Japanese text, several changes are made to the translations to make them fit:
- The kanji "所持金" (money) is abbreviated to the dollar sign "$".
- The triangle character "▲" is changed to a caret "^".
- The block character "■" is changed to the at sign "@".
Variable #20's name is technically not the same as the original game. The character \ (U+005C) is usually a backslash, but is replaced by the Microsoft Shift JIS encoding with the yen symbol. The yen symbol used in the table is the dedicated character ¥ (U+00A5). This is to better represent the intended name of the variable. For more information, see wikipedia:Yen and yuan sign#Code points.
Unlike switches and common events, the variable translations are in lowercase.
Common Events
The common event indices go up to 340, but the last one with any events is 339. (wow, big difference...)
In the Steam version, CE90 is renamed to 00000000000259.
In addition to translating the Japanese text, several changes are made to the translations to make them fit:
- The kanji "捨" (discard) is abbreviated to "X".
- The kanji "音" (sound) is abbreviated to "S".
- The kanji "金" (gold) is abbreviated to the dollar sign "$" (just like the term for money "所持金").
- The block character "■" is changed to the at sign "@".
To aid in searching through the table, several consistencies are implemented:
- All switch, variable, and common event IDs are prefixed with S, V, and CE respectively.
- Any mention of files use the format
[folder name] #[table id]
, e.g. "Plays music #48" - Switches or variables being set use one equals sign, e.g. "Sets V18 = 1"
- Switches or variables being checked use two equals signs, e.g. "If V18 == 1"
Notes
- ↑ Appears when stabbing two specific candles in Candle World in the English Steam version.
- ↑ on steam this is unused, the file it tries to call instead is 000000000005.WAV which doesn’t exist
- ↑ on steam pirori dont use this but lizardmen do, pirori call 000000000006.WAV which doesn’t exist
- ↑ In the Steam version, the terrain tries to use file 0000000281, which does not exist. No sound plays.
