There are 24 effects that the player can find, each of which affects Madotsuki's appearance and often abilities. Very few players achieve the goal of gathering all effects alone, and walkthroughs exist mainly to help find each one.
There are 24 'proper' effects in Yume Nikki. Each 'effect' changes Madotsuki's appearance and some provide special abilities. None of the effects are mandatory to progress through the game, so they can be collected in any order but many optional events and locations are unreachable without them.

The effects are scattered throughout the dream world, and some more easily found than others. Gathering all 24 effects is considered to be the primary objective of the game, and only when all effects have been gathered can the player see the game's finale. Some effects are found in certain locations whereas others are received from interacting with characters.

Very few players achieve the goal of gathering all effects alone, so walkthroughs exist mainly to help find each one.

These effects exist in the sprite sheets, and have unconfirmed uses, if they will even be implemented in the future.

Appearance: Madotsuki appears in monochrome.

Speculation: It's possible this was intended to be the appearance Madotsuki takes on in the White Desert, as there is no counterpart FC world sprite. If this is the case, then it's likely that it was dropped since it could cause confusion as to whether the White Desert was really white, or whether the effect was a result of a problem with the player's perception of it (as is the case with old monochrome photos).

Allowing Madotsuki to retain her hues makes it clear that the player's vision is normal and that the world is white.

== Looking Left ==
Madotsuki appears in grayscale. (Used for Madotsuki's Ghost, but is much more extensive. Listed as an unused effect because it is created as if it were originally meant to be used as one.)

Appearance: Madotsuki's head is turned to look over her left shoulder. She can sit down like the default form.

=== Will o' the Whisp ===
Speculation: It is a mystery what use this 'effect' could have, but the sprite may have been meant for use in a cut-scene.
Madotsuki becomes a small flame-like spirit and wears the Triangle Kerchief, a possible alternate form for her "transparent" state.

Revision as of 23:34, 5 June 2011

Similar to the speed glitch, it utilises the chair and the bicycle to reach two times the speed the Speed Glitch gives. In all other ways it is the same as the speed glitch. To use it, equip the Bicycle while in the chair, then ride the chair. Go to The Nexus and use 5 to drop the bicycle effect, then pick it back up. Go to the menu and equip any effect; bicycle is used for the fastest speed. Go back to Madotsuki's dream room and enter the now-invisible chair. Exit it to enter hyperspeed. The speed for other effects equals the speed of the speed glitch bicycle, while the bicycle hyperspeed is incredibly fast, equal to the speed of the Candle World Toriningen.

Optional Effect: Madotsuki will sit if 1 is pressed, but the other effect will try to happen as well. (e.g. with the bike, the bell will also ring.) If you switch effects in the menu, speed boost wears off.

Involuntary Effect: Madotsuki's speed increases dramatically + any other involuntary effects associated with used Effect aside from appearance-related effects (after getting off the chair). In FC world, however, Madotsuki takes the form of the effect.

Where Found: Madotsuki's dream room

Other Uses: None

Collision Glitch

Disables most collision via chair and knife. Sit in the chair and equip the knife. Press down Z to ride the chair, and before it stops moving, switch knife hands by pressing 1. Now go into The Nexus. Press 5 to drop your effect, then pick it back up. Equip an effect and unequip it. Madotsuki can now walk through anything with any effect equipped.

Optional Effect: None

Involuntary Effect: Madotsuki can walk through anything. Some loading zones don't trigger.

Unused effects

These are effects that exist in the sprite sheets and have limited handling in the game's coding, but are not accessible in the game. These may be added in a future version of Yume Nikki.

Blindfold

Blindfold.png

Appearance: Madotsuki wears a black blindfold

Speculation: Some kind of effect that affects what Madotsuki can (or can't) see.

Grayscale

Greyscale.png

Appearance: Madotsuki appears in monochrome.

Speculation: It's possible this was intended to be the appearance Madotsuki takes on in the White Desert, as there is no counterpart FC world sprite. If this is the case, then it's likely that it was dropped since it could cause confusion as to whether the White Desert was really white, or whether the effect was a result of a problem with the player's perception of it (as is the case with old monochrome photos).

Allowing Madotsuki to retain her hues makes it clear that the player's vision is normal and that the world is white.

Will o' the Whisp

Will o' the Whisp.png

Appearance: Madotsuki transforms into a blue flame-like spirit wearing the Triangle Kerchief

Speculation: A possible alternate form considered for the 'ghost form' of the Triangle kerchief, as spirits are commonly depicted as blue wisps in Japanese folklore.

Looking Left

Looking Left.png

Appearance: Madotsuki's head is turned to look over her left shoulder. She can sit down like the default form.

Speculation: It is a mystery what use this 'effect' could have, but the sprite may have been meant for use in a cut-scene.
