the whole seems area as if it is a temporal projection of some city. Assuming that greyscale blocks are buildings,  you enter the area in the most recent time with few buildings standing with severe structural damage to each of the buildings . As you progress into each new screen in this area, you are going futher into the past with more buildings and each being better in better condition than the previous screen. At the the end of the area you reach point in time just before whatever event cause this destruction.  The sound track lends itself to this view with how each succussive screen the sound track gets more complex.

This is just my interpretion.
