Reception

In the time that it has been released, the manga has received overall criticism by fans, although there are some that feel it's a great adaptation to the original game. Most of the fans criticize it for a variety of reasons. Some aren't exactly in favor of the new art style. Others heavily dislike the fact of a new story. Rather than only Madotsuki's story, Poniko's and Masada's are also being told. Another change was that the story was told with dialogue, as opposed to the original which was all about the player's interpretation.

Story

It told the story as similarly as the game in the beginning, Madotsuki standing alone in her room decided to wander into her dream world. The effects are interpreted as discs Madotsuki can keep inside her iconic window logo on her sweater. However, everything took a change when she meet Poniko, another dreamer who is trapped in Dream World, along with several other NPCs, such as Monoko, Monoe, Mafurako and Kamakurako. It is revealed that nothing is as it seem and the world is very different from the original game.

Dream World now served as form of 'therapy' to change 'bad girl' into 'good girl', anyone fail to obey or 'corrupted' will end up isolated inside the world. The Dream World shows traumas of the girls' trapped within it, the only means to escape is to collect the effects. Which most, if not all, dreamers failed to do.

Poniko, in Uboa form. Beating Madotsuki with Umbrella Effect.

Trivia

  • Madotsuki's apartment used 3D model similar to the one appeared in Yume Nikki no Tame no Waltz music video, song by Machigerita, the writer of the manga.
  • Many people taken Poniko as Madotsuki's mother in the manga, due to Madotsuki calling out to her mother when she's being beaten. This scene is also speculated as Madotsuki remembering how her mother used to beat her in real life.
