Looking through events in version 0.102c, it seems Ending #? is first triggered when you sleep after gathering at least 24 effects. If you exit this area without triggering the ending, then you can't get the stairs again until you wake up and sleep again. Jumping off the stairs disables them afterwards, and entering the developer's room enables it again.
