Nekoin (ネコイン) is an effect NPC that can be found in Shield-Folk World. It grants Madotsuki the Cat effect.
Overview
Nekoin resembles a pink, cat-shaped coin with a cat face on both sides. It has two dark red eyes and little violet eyelashes that stick out a little when viewed from the side. It floats above the ground, continuously spinning.
Nekoin inhabits Shield-Folk World, initially found in the southeastern part of the world, surrounded by several Shield-Folk. However, it is constantly on the move, possibly making it difficult to find within the world's emptier spaces. Due to its constant movement, it is recommended to use the Bicycle effect to catch up to it once it is eventually found. Once caught and interacted with, it will give Madotsuki the Cat effect.
Trivia
- Nekoin is the only Yume Nikki character on the front page of KIKIYAMA's website other than Madotsuki herself.
- The name "Nekoin" is a portmanteau of "neko" (Japanese for "cat") and "coin".
- The Cat effect references the "Maneki-neko" figure, a Japanese talisman supposed to bring good luck and fortune. Nekoin's appearance resembling a coin ties into this, as not only are Maneki-neko often depicted holding a gold coin, but they are also used as coin banks quite often. On top of that, tiny coin offerings are sometimes left near the Maneki-Neko as a request for good luck, fortune, or wish fulfillment.
- Nekoin's design resembling a spinning coin may be a reference to the spinning coins of the Super Mario series.
