This section of the Style Guide concerns other guidance that does not fit into another category.
Styling
Keep page styling and markup simple. It makes pages easier to edit and more consistent across the wiki. Avoid getting too creative or expressive with idiosyncratic page layouts, HTML tags, funky fonts, modified text sizes, and so on. Simple is best.
Colored Text
In general, do not use colored text in the body of articles, especially text that conveys information solely through color-coding. Text styling like this often causes problems for users who are colorblind.
For colored text in infoboxes, ensure that the text and background have a color contrast ratio of 4.5:1. This tool by WebAIM can be used to check contrast ratios between two colors.
Indentation
Do not place indents or quotation templates at the start of regular article paragraph text. It is unnecessary.
Hiding Content
Do not place article content in scrolling lists or collapse templates, or other forms of styling that hides content from view by default (such as by changing the text color to match the background). It interferes with both readers' and editors' ability to locate text within an article, and makes editing the article more difficult. It also can cause problems for users with limited CSS or JavaScript support. All main article content should be displayed by default.
This policy includes "spoilers". Do not conceal "spoiler content" in articles using collapse templates, scrolling lists, or other types of styling.
Text In Images
Do not put vital information that could be written in the body of an article solely in an image. It makes the text unsearchable, hard to edit, and if the image uses a nonstandard text format, often hard to read.
For example, do not write out instructions for activating an event in an image. Simply put it in the article instead.
Non-Breaking Spaces
If it would be better for a phrase to not have a line break in the middle of it, it is encouraged that you use a non-breaking space to prevent text wrapping. When using a non-breaking space, a line break will not occur at that point. To use a non-breaking space, use
in place of a regular space. This only works while source editing. For example, June 2006
instead of June 2006 will ensure that the entire phrase "June 2006" always appears on the same line.
Good places to use non-breaking spaces include:
- Between elements of dates (
June 2006
) - Between times and am or pm (
1:30 pm
) - Between numbers and units (
200 luna
,20 kg
) - Between elements of a proper name (
H. sapiens
,James VI
,Galaxy Express 999
).
Pronunciation
Where appropriate, pronunciation guides may be provided. Render all pronunciation in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), using broad transcription. Do not attempt this if you are unfamiliar with the IPA.
Badges
Do not discuss badges in articles outside of the YNOproject namespace.
Badges will be automatically listed in Locationbox if correctly added to the badge list of the game. This may take time to update.
