Yume Nikki (ゆめにっき, Dream Diary, Japanese pronunciation: /jɯme ɲikki/) is a freeware game created by KIKIYAMA, using the RPG Maker 2003 engine. The game was initially released on June 26, 2004, under version 0.00. The game received several updates until October 1, 2007, when version 0.10 was released.[1]
The player takes control of a girl named Madotsuki to explore her dreams. The object of the game is to seek out and acquire all 24 "effects". The game otherwise has no plot or dialogue, and most of the game's content is left to interpretation.
The game became popular outside of Japan due to its unique presentation. Discussion of events and secrets such as the Uboa event spread across the Internet. The first Yume Nikki translation was made by the fan website Uboachan, and remained the most popular translation until the official English Steam release.
Versions
Version 0.10a
The current version of Yume Nikki was originally uploaded to the Playism distribution platform on February 10, 2012 as version 0.10a, roughly five years after the release of 0.10. This was followed by an official English localization releasing worldwide on July 11, 2012.
KIKIYAMA built version 0.10a on October 6, 2007 to incorporate bug fixes for version 0.10 that were released in a separate patch titled "Yumesyuusei".[1] The download link on KIKIYAMA's website was never replaced to host version 0.10a, leaving its distribution to AGM Playism.
On January 9th, 2018, 0.10a was released on Steam for free by AGM Playism and Kadokawa.[2] The release of Yume Nikki on Steam made the game more easily accessible to new players, since it no longer requires players to change their systems to Japanese locale in order to run it.
Mobile Version
On August 30th, 2018, an officially licensed version for iOS and Android was released by CAERUXLab for US$2.99, making it the only release of the game to date to cost money.[3] The game was remade using RPG Maker MV, a more recent edition of RPG Maker that has native mobile support.
Other Versions
Besides the official releases of the game, several fan translations have been made, most of which translate only the in-game text.
A file archiver compatible with foreign encodings such as Shift-JIS is needed to extract most of the below releases. Additionally, a locale switcher or emulator may be necessary to successfully run the game afterwards.
More information and help with encoding and locale issues can be found on the Technical Difficulties page.
There are numerous translation differences between the Uboachan fan translation, the official Steam translation, and the official mobile release. There are also unique technical issues in all three, although gameplay is mostly unaffected by these issues.
