This page lists common terms used on Yume Wiki and their definitions.
- area
- A place contained within another. Some examples: a location is an area in the dream world, and a map can be an area of that location.

- An NPC that chases the player, and upon "catching" will usually trap the player in a chaser trap, or perform another undesirable action such as sending you backwards or stealing money.
- chaser trap
- An area in a location that is almost always separated from the main area, existing solely as a dead-end for when you are caught by a chaser.
- collectible
- A word used to broadly refer to anything that can be collected in a game. This usually includes effects, menu themes, and wallpapers, but may include money, music, and map completion.
- connection
- Any method of transitioning from one location to another, such as by interacting with an NPC or moving through a path.
- dream world
- The dream world is a general term for all the locations accessed by the game's method of entering the main gameplay loop, usually sleeping. Some games can have more specific terms and different methods: for example, Collective Unconscious involves entering a spirit world, and .flow involves entering a flow state.
- dreamer
- Refers to the player character and protagonist (as most YNFG involve the protagonist dreaming).
- effect reaction

- event
- 1. A special interaction or occurrence, such as a cutscene playing or a rare NPC appearing.
- 2. In RPG Maker, the event system is used to place most characters, a lot of tiles and graphics, and for background systems such as timers.
- interact
- Specifically refers to pressing the engine's interact key (such as
Enter
orZ
). For interactions involving the use of effects, see reaction. - location
- One or more maps that form a thematically consistent area, that is distinct in its connections and features.
- map
- 1. A part of a location corresponding to a game map file (e.g.
Map0001.lmu
. - 2. Also called location map and map image
An image displaying a location, either entirely or partially, primarily used to aid in navigation. - money
- Generic term referring to any currency system in a game, such as yen in Yume Nikki and yume in Yume 2kki.
- NPC
- Abbreviation of non-player character, commonly used in video game talk, and used in Yume Wiki to refer to any character besides the dreamer.

- The result of using an effect when near an NPC, e.g. "Reacts to the Cat effect by sneezing"
- subarea (AKA sub-area)
- An area that is separated in some way from the location it is entered from, but not significant enough in features (such as connections) to be considered a distinct location on the wiki. A subarea may be separate by a thematic distinction, method of entry, or usage of another map file.

- YNFG
- Abbreviation for Yume Nikki Fangame. Commonly written in lowercase by the community.
- yume
- 1. Literally "dream", used rarely to refer to a YNFG.
- 2. The money in Yume 2kki, represented by the kanji 夢. See Yume 2kki:Money.
