This page lists common terms used on Yume Wiki and their definitions.

area
A place contained within another. Some examples: a location is an area in the dream world, and a map can be an area of that location.
See also: subarea
chaser
An NPC that chases the player, and upon "catching" will usually trap the player in a chaser trap, or perform another undesirable action such as sending you backwards or stealing money.
chaser trap
An area in a location that is almost always separated from the main area, existing solely as a dead-end for when you are caught by a chaser.
collectible
Also called collectable
A word used to broadly refer to anything that can be collected in a game. This usually includes effects, menu themes, and wallpapers, but may include money, music, and map completion.
connection
Any method of transitioning from one location to another, such as by interacting with an NPC or moving through a path.
dream world
The dream world is a general term for all the locations accessed by the game's method of entering the main gameplay loop, usually sleeping. Some games can have more specific terms and different methods: for example, Collective Unconscious involves entering a spirit world, and .flow involves entering a flow state. The counterpart is real world.
dreamer
Refers to the player character and protagonist (as most YNFG involve the protagonist dreaming).
effect reaction
See reaction
event
1.  A special interaction or occurrence, such as a cutscene playing or a rare NPC appearing.
2.  In RPG Maker, the event system is used to place most characters, a lot of tiles and graphics, and for background systems such as timers.
interact
Specifically refers to pressing the engine's interact key (such as Enter or Z). For interactions involving the use of effects, see reaction.
location
One or more maps that form a thematically consistent area, that is distinct in its connections and features.
map
1.  A part of a location corresponding to a game map file (e.g. Map0001.lmu).
2.  Also called location map and map image
An image displaying a location, either entirely or partially, primarily used to aid in navigation.
money
Generic term referring to any currency system in a game, such as yen in Yume Nikki and yume in Yume 2kki.
npc
Abbreviation of non-player character, commonly used in video games, and used in Yume Wiki to refer to any character besides the dreamer. Usually written in uppercase as NPC.
See also: chaser, a specific type of NPC.
reaction
The result of using an effect when near an NPC, e.g. "Reacts to the Cat effect by sneezing"
real world
The counterpart to the dream world, this is the starting position, and is usually where you can save and change any settings.
subarea
An area that is separated in some way from the location it is entered from, but not significant enough in features (such as connections) to be considered a distinct location on the wiki. A subarea may be separate by a thematic distinction, method of entry, or usage of another map file.
wake up
Returning to the real world, either by choice or due to a forced wake up that may be caused by a wake up event.
world
See location
ynfg
Abbreviation for Yume Nikki Fangame. Commonly written in lowercase by the community.
yume
1.  Literally "dream", used rarely to refer to a YNFG.
2.  The money in Yume 2kki, represented by the kanji 夢. See Yume 2kki:Money.
