Honestly, I thought going backwards through the Star Ocean provided a pretty interesting experience, almost as if the tension is easing as you travel through the caves. | |||
That said though, I did test out being able to explore Star Ocean without the Penguin, and somewhat interestingly, the game still equips it, and you can keep it on until you take it off. You can even still slide with it. It's still a sizable enough bug that there should probably be a flag in the Rusted City that doesn't let you enter Star Ocean without the Penguin. Connection to Rusted city seems questionable for me from the design point of view: that way, it is possible to navigate to Star Ocean without penguin effect, whilst Urotsuki automatically equips it there - even if she doesn't have one.
