Onsen-san (おんせん-さん, Mr./Mrs. Hot Spring) is a strange character that can be found in the Hot Spring House in the The Wilderness.
Overview
Onsen-san is a thin creature with blue legs and a dark-red body that turns into a green gradient on its back. Its head is bright red with a light-green eye, also having a tear-like streak going down its face. A cord extends from the back of its head and into one of the springs in the Hot Spring House it inhabits, seemingly drinking the water.
Due to the Hot Spring House being a dark area, it is easier to see Onsen-san while using the Lamp effect. It simply sits and guzzles the spring water through its head cord, not even moving from its spot when the Cat effect is used. However, when stabbed with the Knife effect, its head will turn into a deep blue color while its eye turns red, ceasing its water drinking and presumably dying. It can not be brought back from this state until the room is reentered.
Trivia
- Onsen-san may be based on the akaname of Japanese mythology. While they are normally depicted as human-like creatures with long hair, they share Onsen-san's trait of residing in dark places, especially bathhouses. Akaname are also known for their red color and long tongue, the latter of which is used to lap up the filth of bathhouses. This may have been what inspired Onsen-san's head cord and red coloration.
