Collective Unconscious:Train Station

Revision as of 05:19, 25 July 2024 by Redo (talk | contribs) (More headings to make the article more organized and easier to read. I think Night Train probably makes this page one of the more popular ones, so I wanted to be sure that it's explained clearly to save others the doubt of whether or not they're looking for it in the correct places.)

Annotated map of Train Station

Train Station is an area that can be accessed through the stairs in Pale Park.

Features

Despite having only two destinations, Train Station is an elaborate spirit world that is made up of many linear, winding corridors. Additionally, it is possible to change the time of day while wandering the station, changing its ambience and providing an opportunity to access the rare Night Train event.

Following the path from the Pale Park entrance leads to a large lobby populated by countless shadows with humanoid forms. These shadows block Minnatsuki's movement as they wander aimlessly, and they cannot be killed with the Soulfire eidolon. The only NPC in the entirety of the spirit world that can be interacted with is Monsieur Pivoine, who can normally be found in a booth on the north side of the lobby. By interacting with the window on the left side of the booth, Minnatsuki can purchase a train ticket from him for 100 Luna, which can be used to open the gates in the northwest corner of the lobby, ultimately granting direct access to the train platform and Overgrown Railway by extension. After entering the room beyond the gates, traveling north leads to the train platform.

Using a slightly longer route, the train platform can also be reached without needing to purchase a ticket by taking the door in the southeast corner of the lobby, which leads to the deeper tunnels of the train station. At the first fork, taking the door inside the spiral path to the west leads to the area behind the ticket gates. Going east at the fork leads even deeper into the Train Station tunnels; this is one way to access Sun Reactor, but this route is otherwise a dead end, and it is longer than taking the route through the night station.

Train Platform

The train platform is a long room within the train station that, like the lobby, is populated by several shadow people. The train along the north edge of the platform can be boarded by entering any of its doors.

Inside the train, Minnatsuki can sit in any of its seats. After sitting idle for 15 seconds, Minnatsuki will begin to doze off; if Minnatsuki remains still for another 10 seconds, they will fall asleep, and the screen will fade to black. The Train Ride event is then displayed: the train leaves the station and is shown traveling along a bridge, with a city and forested hill in the background. This event continues until any interact key is pressed, at which point the player will regain control of Minnatsuki in the same seat they fell asleep in. There is no way to return to Train Station at this point, and leaving the train leads to Overgrown Railway.

Night Station

The passage in the northeast corner of the main lobby of Train Station leads to a long hallway with a window, through which a distant view of a city and its coastline can be seen. Continuing east through this hallway then leads deep into the train station tunnels, though the normal Train Station music will be replaced with a mechanical hum, the station itself will be darker, and neither the lobby nor the train platform will be populated by any NPCs, as though it is late at night. The path from the window hallway leads to a set of gates; though these gates are normally a dead end when the end of the Train Station tunnels is reached normally, the gates are opened while the station is dark. Turning around and returning to the lobby from here resets the station to daytime, meaning that the train platform can only be reached in the dark by continuing through the tunnels.

To the south of the gates is a large, round room with a pillar in its center, surrounded by a large pit. The next room to the south is a smaller hallway with a manhole; Minnatsuki can climb down the manhole regardless of whether or not the station is dark, leading to a room where Sun Reactor can be accessed via the panel on the wall in the center.

Continuing through the night station beyond the manhole and through the various tunnels eventually leads back to the lobby and its surrounding areas, through which the train platform can be accessed; as with the gates at the end of the window hallway, the gates in the lobby are also open while the station is dark. Normally, the train can still be boarded from the platform as normal; Monsieur Pivoine, who is not at the ticket booth when the station is dark, can instead be found inside of the train using this method. The train works as normal at this time, connecting to Overgrown Railway, but the station will no longer be dark after getting off the train.

Night Train

Every time Minnatsuki enters the spirit realm from their room, there is a 10/256 chance (approximately 1/26 or 3.9%) for the Night Train event to be active. If active the screen will tint a dark purple color before fading out when entering either door to the train platform when the station is dark (i.e. after taking the passage in the northeast corner of the lobby and following the tunnels). The platform will be much darker than normal, the train cannot be entered (as you've effectively "missed the train," per the badge description), and a unique BGM will be playing. The train platform can be entered and exited at will in this state; the Night Train event itself will only end once Minnatsuki returns from the spirit realm, and the train will continue to function as normal while the station is not dark (possible when leaving and returning to Train Station).

Specifically, Variable 30 - which is set to a random number between 0 and 255 every time the totem in Minnatsuki's Room is activated - must be between 0 and 9. Train Station is very time-consuming to navigate, making repeated attempts to activate the Night Train event highly impractical. It is more feasible to take shorter trips to find other events in the spirit realm that depend on Variable 30, making the trip through the night station only when the odds have been narrowed down acceptably. Two such options for this:

  • Like Train Station, Portrait Forest is accessible from Pale Park. The time of day in Portrait Forest depends on Variable 30; if it is nighttime, then Variable 30 is between 128 and 255, indicating that Night Train is not active. If it is daytime, then Variable 30 is between 0 and 127, effectively giving Night Train an improved 7.8% odds of being active.
  • In each visit to the spirit realm, the location of the Wanderer is determined by Variable 30. The Wanderer will be located near the dock in Fantasy Forest when the variable is between 0 and 42, a much shorter trip than the train platform is; encountering the Wanderer in Fantasy Forest effectively gives Night Train a 23% chance of being active. If the Wanderer is not present in Fantasy Forest, then Night Train is not active.
