==Basic Information==
== Introduction ==
Even though Yume 2kki is can be an amazing gaming experience, installing it can be a real hassle. The main point of this pahe is to make installation easier. Depending on which computer version you're using determines how difficult it will be to make the game work.
==Windows XP==
'''Step 1 - Installing files for East Asian Languages'''

Go to Control panel
Go to Regional and Language Options
Click the "Install files for East Asian Languages" checkbox
Press OK
At this point, Windows will begin the install. It'll probably ask for a CD, so have one nearby.

'''Step 2 - Installing piaipApplocale and the Context Menu registry thing'''
Even though ''Yume 2kki'' can be an amazing gaming experience, installing it can be tricky. This guide should be enough for most people to get the game working smoothly.

Download pApploc[[ http://ntu.csie.org/~piaip/papploc.msi| here]]
If you are having problems running or installing the game, check the [[Yume 2kki:Troubleshooting|Troubleshooting]] page, which lists various common problems.
Download this attachment Context Menu.zip [http://www.hongfire.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=86298&d=1208143928 here]
Install pApploc to its default location
Extract the Context menu.rar and double click Install.reg
To uninstall, double click on Uninstall.reg
(pApplocale is a modified version of applocale that skips the annoying step-by-step thing everytime you want to start a program. The contextmenu.reg is a registry file that adds the option to Run with pApplocale to the right-click menu on Windows.)

== Pitfalls ==
A few things to keep in mind before setting up the game:
* Putting the game in a path with non-ASCII characters (e.g. C:\Users\Amón\Yume 2kki) will most likely result in errors.
* If extracting the game files with 7-Zip, make sure to run 7-Zip with Microsoft AppLocale, otherwise some files with Japanese names will be given gibberish names and the game will not be able to locate these files when you go to run Yume 2kki.
== Preparation ==
On '''''Windows XP''''', some additional setup is required for East-Asian languages.
# Go to Control Panel.
# Go to Regional and Language Options.
# Click the "Install files for East-Asian Languages" checkbox.
# Press OK. Windows will install East-Asian language support.

'''Step 3 - Downloading and installing the Japanese RPG Maker 2000 RTP'''
== Installing AppLocale for Windows XP through Windows 8 ==
=== Installing AppLocale and the Japanese RPG Maker 2000 RTP ===
Download Microsoft [[wikipedia:AppLocale|AppLocale]] from [http://www.mediafire.com/download/pdcw3yxbx8v9uih/apploc.msi here (mediafire mirror)]

Download the RPG maker 2000 RTP [http://rmt.divinelegy.com/utilities/ here] When it finishes downloading, double-click it and it will extract somewhere. This is not the installation. After extracting, go the the folder you extracted it, and use pApplocale when running RPG2000RTP.exe (right-click -> Japanese locale) Install it normally. If you did everything right, you'll see no errors. Most common errors are the installer freezing or stop working at some .wav files. If this happens, your applocale isn't installed right.
On '''''Windows XP''''', open the "apploc.msi" file you downloaded earlier and follow the installation instructions.

'''Step 4 - Downloading the most recent version of Yume 2kki'''
On '''''Windows Vista through Windows 8''''', the process is a bit more complicated.
# Open the start menu, type "cmd" in the search box, then right click "cmd.exe" and select “Run as Administrator”.
# Type the following command and press enter:
msiexec /i "C:\Users\...\Downloads\apploc.msi"
Make sure to replace the "C:\Users..." path with the full filename of apploc.msi. Also, the quotes are important!

You can see all the yume 2kki downloads [http://loda.jp/yume2kki_5/ here]
AppLocale will be used to install the RTP and later to run ''Yume 2kki''. To install the RTP using AppLocale:
You'll see a ton of versions. You'll want to download the files where it says "ゆめ2っき v0.095d part1-5[[File:Install.png|thumb|Download everything boxed in red]]", as shown in the picture on the right.
# Download the RTP [https://tkool.jp/products/rtp/2000rtp.zip here] [http://web.archive.org/web/20130521184330/http://download.tkool-online.com/rtp/2000rtp.exe (Mirror)]
# If you downloaded a ZIP file, extract the contents. Otherwise, if you downloaded an EXE file, run it and allow it to extract. In the extracted files will be a file called RPG2000RTP.exe.
# Open AppLocale, and when prompted, select RPG2000RTP.exe as the executable file to run.
# Select Japanese (日本語) as the language, which is the very last option in the language dropdown menu.
# Run the installer. The "next" button should be highlighted by default.
If you have attempted to install the RTP before and failed, or have difficulties installing the RTP, make sure other versions of the RTP have been uninstalled through Add or Remove Programs ('''''Vista and later:''''' Programs and Features) in the Control Panel and try again.

Theses 4 files are the latest version. Click on the filename to download them.
== Installing Locale Emulator for Windows 10 ==
=== Installing Locale Emulator and the Japanese RPG Maker 2000 RTP ===
Since AppLocale is incompatible with Windows 10, a program called Locale Emulator will be used instead. (Keep scrolling for information on how to run Yume 2kki without using a 3rd party software)
Download the latest version of [http://pooi.moe/Locale-Emulator/ Locale Emulator] from [https://mega.nz/#F!QYlWRDYK!SZngRnKE1RMKlvCQJGcQBg here (MEGA mirror)]
If, when following the instructions, the game does not operate correctly, download Time Zones.zip.

Patches and bugfixes are also there, they usually appear like this :
# Extract Locale.Emulator.x.x.x.x.zip, and move the extracted files to a permanent location. (because you will NOT be able to move these files after installation).
# Open LEInstaller.exe and click on '''Install / Upgrade'''. Make sure to save any documents open in Windows File Explorer, as the program will restart them automatically, regardless of which button is pressed.
# After LE has installed, run LEGUI.exe, which will provide the information needed to display the game in Japanese.
# You should now see "Locale Emulator" in the context menu when right-clicking on files.

# Follow the installer. The "next" button should be highlighted by default.
If you have attempted to install the RTP before and failed, or have difficulties installing the RTP, make sure other versions of the RTP have been uninstalled through Programs and Features in the Control Panel and try again.

By using Google Translator, you can see if it's a patch, too.
The official link for more instructions and FAQs is [http://xupefei.github.io/Locale-Emulator/ here].

3. Anyway, after downloading all these files, using pApplocale, run the .exe (in this case, 129.exe). It'll extract all the files to a folder.
''Note: If the Japanese RTP is stuck at 44%, either download from this [https://web.archive.org/web/20160306073027/http://91.121.173.205/rmrk/rtp132e.zip English RTP] instead, or change the system locale to Japanese, as the issue is related to the use of non-Unicode characters. The steps to changing the system locale are as follows:''
# Open the Control Panel, and select "Clock, Language and Region".
#* You can also access this from Settings, selecting "Time & Language", then "Additional date, time & regional settings".
# Click "Region", then select the "Administrative" tab.
# Click "Change system locale...", and select "Japanese (Japan)". Do not select the option to set the encoding to UTF-8, assuming that the option is available. Doing so will cause various issues in displaying the game's text, and in installing the RTP.
# Click "OK" for both windows, and restart your computer.

'''Step 5 - Playing the game'''
''Another Note: If it's not working when trying to extract the contents using the ZIP file then try downloading the EXE file and run with the simulator.''

Go to the folder where you extracted the game
== Installing Yume 2kki ==
Check to see if there's a file called RPG_RT.exe. If there's not, you can use any RPG_RT.exe from any game. But you can also get it from [http://www.4shared.com/file/_2bnpFMU/RPG_RT.html here]
''Yume 2kki'' download links can be found [[Yume 2kki:Downloads|here]] on the wiki. You can choose to download from the official source or a mirror. If the mirror is up-to-date, try a mirror download first; then try the downloads from GetUploader; and lastly the downloads from Dropbox.
Right-click RPG_RT.exe and open it using the Japanese Locale. <u>'''''Make sure you do this every time you play the game.'''''</u>
==Windows Vista==
Installation on windows vista computers is similar to installation on windows XP models, but requires a few extra steps.

'''-FOLLOW EVERY INSTRUCTION FROM THE XP GUIDE UNTIL YOU GET TO TO pAPPLOCALE INSTALATION-'''
If downloading from the official links (on GetUploader), make sure to download ''all'' of the files in the series (e.g. ゆめ2っきver0.102b.part01.exe, ゆめ2っきver0.102b.part02.rar, etc.). GetUploader only allows ''one'' download at a time, so be aware of this. If you cannot identify the download button, it has the text 「ダウンロード」 written on it.

'''Step 1 - Change some settings'''
If you want to apply any patches to the game (such as an unofficial English patch or an official update patch), download those files too. Make sure the version numbers match before applying a patch!

Unlike XP, there are certain settings you need to change to get the game working. You will either have to do one of two things to get pApplocale running correctly.
=== Windows XP through Windows 8 ===
'''If you downloaded the game via mirror''', you will need to extract the archive with an archive manager. If you don't have an archive manager that can extract 7z files, a free, high-quality choice is [http://www.7-zip.org/ 7-Zip].

1. Turn off User Account Control's security measure. This can be done by going to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety > User Accounts > Change User Acoount Control Settings. Make sure you set it to Never.
'''If you downloaded the game via GetUploader''', you will need to run the self-extracting EXE file with AppLocale:
# Start AppLocale
# When prompted, choose the "...part01.exe" file as the file to run.
# Select Japanese (日本語; the very last option) in the language menu that follows.
# Start the self-extractor. Keep in mind that all of the downloaded parts must be kept in the same folder for this step to work.
You will now have a new folder (typically named similarly to「ゆめ2っきver0.101」) in the same location as the archive EXE.

2. Run an elevated command prompt by right clicking on Command Prompt on Start Menu and then select “Run as Administrator”. Click on Continue when User Account Control dialog prompt comes out. Change directory to the folder where you put the apploc.msi Windows Installer Package. (C:\Users\[Your username here]\Downloads\papploc.msi From there pApplocale should install succesfully.
'''If you downloaded the game via Dropbox, or have downloaded official patches using the ZIP archive format''', you will most likely run into codepage issues if you extract the game by normal means. There is no easy way to circumvent this issue on Windows. Some suggestions include:
* Download an archive manager (if you do not already have one), start it using AppLocale with the Japanese locale, and extract the files from the archive via the archive manager's interface.
** The 64-bit version of 7-Zip seems to have issues with this method; try the 32-bit version if you run into problems.
* Use the command-line [http://unarchiver.c3.cx/commandline unar] program to extract the archive. The ecoding "Windows-31J" should be specified.
'''Once the files are extracted''', look inside them for another folder (typically「ゆめ2っき」) which contains the actual game data. To apply patches, extract and copy the patch data into this folder and overwrite existing files. (Some patches may differ in installation; check for instructions that come with the patch.) You may now move the 「ゆめ2っき」folder wherever you'd like.

'''From there just follow steps 4-5 from the XP installation guide'''
The last step is to create a shortcut to play the game via AppLocale. The process is similar to before:
==Windows 7 Home Premium==
# Start AppLocale
If you are as unfortunate as ending up using a Windows 7 Home Premium computer, I'm sorry to say that this has to be the most frustrating installation process by far, due to the fact that Windows 7 Home Premium computers dont have the ability to Change languages, as well as having to go through the UAC/cmd measures taken by windows vista models.
# When prompted, choose "RPG_RT.exe" file as the file to run. If you don't want to play the game in fullscreen, input "x x Window" (without quotes) for the program arguments.
# Select Japanese (日本語; the very last option) in the language menu that follows.
# Check "Create a shortcut to always run this application with AppLocale" and rename it to whatever you wish.
# Start the game!
The shortcut that is created from the previous steps will be found in the start menu under Programs -> Microsoft AppLocale, and can be safely moved to another location.

'''Step 1 - Use Vistalizator to add Japanese languages to your computer'''
=== Windows 10 ===
'''If you downloaded the game via mirror''', you will need to extract the archive with an archive manager. If you don't have an archive manager that can extract 7z files, a free, high-quality choice is [http://www.7-zip.org/ 7-Zip].

Vistalizator is a great software that allows you to change language features on computers that dont have the ability to change them theirselves. Download Vistalizator and the Japanese laguage packs from [http://www.froggie.sk/ here]
'''Once the files are extracted''', look inside them for another folder (typically「ゆめ2っき」) which contains the actual game data. To apply patches, extract and copy the patch data into this folder and overwrite existing files. (Some patches may differ in installation; check for instructions that come with the patch.) You may now move the 「ゆめ2っき」folder wherever you'd like.

From there you should open Vistalizator, click on "Add Languages" and then locate the directory the Japanese langusge pack is (the file name should look like a bunch of random letters and numbers). Then select the Japanese bar, and click "Add Language" (Installing the language pack could take up to 20 minutes)
The last step is to right-click either "Start.exe" or "RPG_RT.exe", then go to the Locale Emulator dropdown menu and click "Run in Japanese."<br />
The game should now begin with Japanese characters.

From here you have one of two options:
== Running Yume 2kki without a 3rd Party Software ==

1. Turn off UAC, as specified by the Vista Installation
==== '''This method is verified for Windows 10 only''' ====
If you don't wish to use software like [http://pooi.moe/Locale-Emulator/ Locale Emulator] or [https://easyrpg.org/player/ EasyRPG Player], then there is an easy method to setting up your computer to be able to run Yume 2kki, or other Japanese RPG Maker games, without the use of these programs. Just follow the steps below:
# Locate your system's language settings and install the Japanese language onto your device. This will allow your system to read Japanese characters.
# After installing the Japanese language, locate and change your system locale settings (aka non-Unicode program configuration). Set your system locale to Japanese (Japan). Your system will need to restart after this.
# Download the RTP [https://tkool.jp/products/rtp/2000rtp.zip here] [http://web.archive.org/web/20130521184330/http://download.tkool-online.com/rtp/2000rtp.exe (Mirror)]
# Start the game
This should allow the game to run without any problems. Please leave a comment in case there are any issues.

2. Run an elevated command prompt by right clicking on the Start Menu and then searcing "cmd.exe". Right click it and select “Run as Administrator”. Click on Continue when User Account Control dialog prompt comes out. Change directory to the folder where you put the apploc.msi Windows Installer Package. (C:\Users\[Your username here]\Downloads\papploc.msi From there pApplocale should install succesfully.
'''Not installing the Japanese language before switching your system locale to Japanese could potentially break your system, though this isn't guaranteed, so be careful while setting up your system.'''

'''From there just follow steps 4-5 from the XP installation guide'''
== Running Yume 2kki using EasyRPG Player ==
==Windows 7 Home Ultimate or Windows 7 Enterprise==
As of [https://easyrpg.org/player/ EasyRPG Player] version 0.6.2.3, the game can be played relatively well, with only minor visual and audio glitches and inconsistencies. However, setting it up to run correctly requires a certain level of tweaking. The following instructions will guide you through the process. [[Yume 2kki:Downloads#EasyRPG Translation Guide|This method also allows you to use translations with your game, by following the instructions present here]].
Installing Yume 2kki on a Windows 7 computer is similar to installing it on a Vista, so just use that as a refrence

Setting up Yume 2kki itself:
*Download the latest version of the game.
*Download the RTP [https://tkool.jp/products/rtp/2000rtp.zip here] [http://web.archive.org/web/20130521184330/http://download.tkool-online.com/rtp/2000rtp.exe (Mirror)]. Alternatively, if you don't want to deal with having Japanese settings, you can also try to install the [https://www.rpgmakerweb.com/run-time-package English RTP] (Select RPG Maker 2000 and then Download Run Time Package on the website). If you are playing on a non-desktop platform, the location needed for the RTP may be different: you should be able to find this info for some platforms on the [https://wiki.easyrpg.org/user/player/rtp EasyRPG Wiki].
*Either use an archiver that is unicode-aware, or temporarily set your system locale to Japanese until you unpack the Japanese RTP (if you don't use the English RTP) and the game. Once they are extracted, you can revert to your original locale. If this step was successful, there should be no mojibake filenames present anywhere within the game's directories.

Setting up EasyRPG Player:
*Download the latest version.
*Extract the archive
*Copy ''Player.exe'' to the game's base folder (it should be alongside ''RPG_RT.exe'' and ''Harmony.dll'').
*And finally, launch the player. If everything has been set up as above, the game should look (and sound) practically identical to when it is run through RPG_RT.

==Refrences==

              cd "path/to/yume/2kki"
              exec wine start.exe</nowiki>
Paste the text above into a file and run <code>chmod +x the_file</code> to make it executable.

=== Possible Issues ===
If you get "Invalid Name" error when trying to install the RTP, try renaming the directory the installer is in, make sure the name doesn't contain any [https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/Mojibakevector.png mojibake].

If you have troubles unzipping archive without mojibake (all Japanese characters are not displayed correctly) - unzip archive using [https://github.com/m13253/unzip-iconv unzip-iconv]. Some distributions might have it in their repository ([https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/unzip-iconv ArchLinux] have this patch on AUR) or maybe you already have one - just check is you have ''-I'' and ''-O'' option.
And than, run:
<code>unzip -O shift-jis *path to archive*</code>.
Same applies to archive with the game itself later.

If the game crashes when entering the Factory in [[Yume 2kki:GALAXY Town|GALAXY Town]], applying the patch below might help.

Introduction

Even though Yume 2kki can be an amazing gaming experience, installing it can be tricky. This guide should be enough for most people to get the game working smoothly.

If you are having problems running or installing the game, check the Troubleshooting page, which lists various common problems.

Pitfalls

A few things to keep in mind before setting up the game:

  • Putting the game in a path with non-ASCII characters (e.g. C:\Users\Amón\Yume 2kki) will most likely result in errors.
  • If extracting the game files with 7-Zip, make sure to run 7-Zip with Microsoft AppLocale, otherwise some files with Japanese names will be given gibberish names and the game will not be able to locate these files when you go to run Yume 2kki.

Preparation

On Windows XP, some additional setup is required for East-Asian languages.

  1. Go to Control Panel.
  2. Go to Regional and Language Options.
  3. Click the "Install files for East-Asian Languages" checkbox.
  4. Press OK. Windows will install East-Asian language support.

Installing AppLocale for Windows XP through Windows 8

Installing AppLocale and the Japanese RPG Maker 2000 RTP

Download Microsoft AppLocale from here (mediafire mirror)

On Windows XP, open the "apploc.msi" file you downloaded earlier and follow the installation instructions.

On Windows Vista through Windows 8, the process is a bit more complicated.

  1. Open the start menu, type "cmd" in the search box, then right click "cmd.exe" and select “Run as Administrator”.
  2. Type the following command and press enter:
msiexec /i "C:\Users\...\Downloads\apploc.msi"

Make sure to replace the "C:\Users..." path with the full filename of apploc.msi. Also, the quotes are important!

AppLocale will be used to install the RTP and later to run Yume 2kki. To install the RTP using AppLocale:

  1. Download the RTP here (Mirror)
  2. If you downloaded a ZIP file, extract the contents. Otherwise, if you downloaded an EXE file, run it and allow it to extract. In the extracted files will be a file called RPG2000RTP.exe.
  3. Open AppLocale, and when prompted, select RPG2000RTP.exe as the executable file to run.
  4. Select Japanese (日本語) as the language, which is the very last option in the language dropdown menu.
  5. Run the installer. The "next" button should be highlighted by default.

If you have attempted to install the RTP before and failed, or have difficulties installing the RTP, make sure other versions of the RTP have been uninstalled through Add or Remove Programs (Vista and later: Programs and Features) in the Control Panel and try again.

Installing Locale Emulator for Windows 10

Installing Locale Emulator and the Japanese RPG Maker 2000 RTP

Since AppLocale is incompatible with Windows 10, a program called Locale Emulator will be used instead. (Keep scrolling for information on how to run Yume 2kki without using a 3rd party software) Download the latest version of Locale Emulator from here (MEGA mirror) If, when following the instructions, the game does not operate correctly, download Time Zones.zip.

  1. Extract Locale.Emulator.x.x.x.x.zip, and move the extracted files to a permanent location. (because you will NOT be able to move these files after installation).
  2. Open LEInstaller.exe and click on Install / Upgrade. Make sure to save any documents open in Windows File Explorer, as the program will restart them automatically, regardless of which button is pressed.
  3. After LE has installed, run LEGUI.exe, which will provide the information needed to display the game in Japanese.
  4. You should now see "Locale Emulator" in the context menu when right-clicking on files.

Locale Emulator will be used to install the RTP and later to run Yume 2kki. To install the RTP using Locale Emulator:

  1. Download the RTP here (Mirror)
  2. If you downloaded a ZIP file, extract the contents. Otherwise, if you downloaded an EXE file, run it and allow it to extract. In the extracted files will be a file called RPG2000RTP.exe.
  3. Right click on RPG2000RTP.exe, go to the "Locale Emulator" dropdown menu and click "Run in Japanese"
  4. Follow the installer. The "next" button should be highlighted by default.

If you have attempted to install the RTP before and failed, or have difficulties installing the RTP, make sure other versions of the RTP have been uninstalled through Programs and Features in the Control Panel and try again.

The official link for more instructions and FAQs is here.

Note: If the Japanese RTP is stuck at 44%, either download from this English RTP instead, or change the system locale to Japanese, as the issue is related to the use of non-Unicode characters. The steps to changing the system locale are as follows:

  1. Open the Control Panel, and select "Clock, Language and Region".
    • You can also access this from Settings, selecting "Time & Language", then "Additional date, time & regional settings".
  2. Click "Region", then select the "Administrative" tab.
  3. Click "Change system locale...", and select "Japanese (Japan)". Do not select the option to set the encoding to UTF-8, assuming that the option is available. Doing so will cause various issues in displaying the game's text, and in installing the RTP.
  4. Click "OK" for both windows, and restart your computer.

Another Note: If it's not working when trying to extract the contents using the ZIP file then try downloading the EXE file and run with the simulator.

Installing Yume 2kki

Yume 2kki download links can be found here on the wiki. You can choose to download from the official source or a mirror. If the mirror is up-to-date, try a mirror download first; then try the downloads from GetUploader; and lastly the downloads from Dropbox.

If downloading from the official links (on GetUploader), make sure to download all of the files in the series (e.g. ゆめ2っきver0.102b.part01.exe, ゆめ2っきver0.102b.part02.rar, etc.). GetUploader only allows one download at a time, so be aware of this. If you cannot identify the download button, it has the text 「ダウンロード」 written on it.

If you want to apply any patches to the game (such as an unofficial English patch or an official update patch), download those files too. Make sure the version numbers match before applying a patch!

Windows XP through Windows 8

If you downloaded the game via mirror, you will need to extract the archive with an archive manager. If you don't have an archive manager that can extract 7z files, a free, high-quality choice is 7-Zip.

If you downloaded the game via GetUploader, you will need to run the self-extracting EXE file with AppLocale:

  1. Start AppLocale
  2. When prompted, choose the "...part01.exe" file as the file to run.
  3. Select Japanese (日本語; the very last option) in the language menu that follows.
  4. Start the self-extractor. Keep in mind that all of the downloaded parts must be kept in the same folder for this step to work.

You will now have a new folder (typically named similarly to「ゆめ2っきver0.101」) in the same location as the archive EXE.

If you downloaded the game via Dropbox, or have downloaded official patches using the ZIP archive format, you will most likely run into codepage issues if you extract the game by normal means. There is no easy way to circumvent this issue on Windows. Some suggestions include:

  • Download an archive manager (if you do not already have one), start it using AppLocale with the Japanese locale, and extract the files from the archive via the archive manager's interface.
    • The 64-bit version of 7-Zip seems to have issues with this method; try the 32-bit version if you run into problems.
  • Use the command-line unar program to extract the archive. The ecoding "Windows-31J" should be specified.

Once the files are extracted, look inside them for another folder (typically「ゆめ2っき」) which contains the actual game data. To apply patches, extract and copy the patch data into this folder and overwrite existing files. (Some patches may differ in installation; check for instructions that come with the patch.) You may now move the 「ゆめ2っき」folder wherever you'd like.

The last step is to create a shortcut to play the game via AppLocale. The process is similar to before:

  1. Start AppLocale
  2. When prompted, choose "RPG_RT.exe" file as the file to run. If you don't want to play the game in fullscreen, input "x x Window" (without quotes) for the program arguments.
  3. Select Japanese (日本語; the very last option) in the language menu that follows.
  4. Check "Create a shortcut to always run this application with AppLocale" and rename it to whatever you wish.
  5. Start the game!

The shortcut that is created from the previous steps will be found in the start menu under Programs -> Microsoft AppLocale, and can be safely moved to another location.

Windows 10

If you downloaded the game via mirror, you will need to extract the archive with an archive manager. If you don't have an archive manager that can extract 7z files, a free, high-quality choice is 7-Zip.

The last step is to right-click either "Start.exe" or "RPG_RT.exe", then go to the Locale Emulator dropdown menu and click "Run in Japanese."
The game should now begin with Japanese characters.

Running Yume 2kki without a 3rd Party Software

This method is verified for Windows 10 only

If you don't wish to use software like Locale Emulator or EasyRPG Player, then there is an easy method to setting up your computer to be able to run Yume 2kki, or other Japanese RPG Maker games, without the use of these programs. Just follow the steps below:

  1. Locate your system's language settings and install the Japanese language onto your device. This will allow your system to read Japanese characters.
  2. After installing the Japanese language, locate and change your system locale settings (aka non-Unicode program configuration). Set your system locale to Japanese (Japan). Your system will need to restart after this.
  3. Download the RTP here (Mirror)
  4. Start the game

This should allow the game to run without any problems. Please leave a comment in case there are any issues.

Not installing the Japanese language before switching your system locale to Japanese could potentially break your system, though this isn't guaranteed, so be careful while setting up your system.

Running Yume 2kki using EasyRPG Player

As of EasyRPG Player version 0.6.2.3, the game can be played relatively well, with only minor visual and audio glitches and inconsistencies. However, setting it up to run correctly requires a certain level of tweaking. The following instructions will guide you through the process. This method also allows you to use translations with your game, by following the instructions present here.

Setting up Yume 2kki itself:

  • Download the latest version of the game.
  • Download the RTP here (Mirror). Alternatively, if you don't want to deal with having Japanese settings, you can also try to install the English RTP (Select RPG Maker 2000 and then Download Run Time Package on the website). If you are playing on a non-desktop platform, the location needed for the RTP may be different: you should be able to find this info for some platforms on the EasyRPG Wiki.
  • Either use an archiver that is unicode-aware, or temporarily set your system locale to Japanese until you unpack the Japanese RTP (if you don't use the English RTP) and the game. Once they are extracted, you can revert to your original locale. If this step was successful, there should be no mojibake filenames present anywhere within the game's directories.

Setting up EasyRPG Player:

  • Download the latest version.
  • Extract the archive
  • Copy Player.exe to the game's base folder (it should be alongside RPG_RT.exe and Harmony.dll).
  • And finally, launch the player. If everything has been set up as above, the game should look (and sound) practically identical to when it is run through RPG_RT.

Running Yume 2kki on non-Windows Operating Systems

Yume 2kki can be run perfectly with Wine on OS X, Linux, and other Unix operating systems with a little setup. RPGHub can be used to simplify the process of playing RPG Maker games on non-Windows platforms.

Linux Installation Instructions

  1. Install Wine
  2. Enable the Japanese locale in the /etc/locale.gen file. If there's a line that looks like #ja_JP.UTF-8 UTF-8, remove the #
  3. If not, append ja_JP.UTF-8 UTF-8 to the end of the file. After that run locale-gen to generate the locale. You have to be root to edit the file and regenerate locales.
  4. Download the RTP here (Mirror)
  5. Run the RTP installer with the Japanese locale: LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 wine RPG2000RTP.exe
  6. Download Yume 2kki, refer to the Installing Yume 2kki section, ignore the AppLocale thing and use LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 wine instead.
  7. Extract and run Yume 2kki with the Japanese locale

If you don't want to type in a command every time you start Yume 2kki, you can create a shell script for that:

              #!/bin/sh
              export LANG="ja_JP.UTF-8"

              cd "path/to/yume/2kki"
              exec wine start.exe

Paste the text above into a file and run chmod +x the_file to make it executable.

Possible Issues

If you get "Invalid Name" error when trying to install the RTP, try renaming the directory the installer is in, make sure the name doesn't contain any mojibake.

If you have troubles unzipping archive without mojibake (all Japanese characters are not displayed correctly) - unzip archive using unzip-iconv. Some distributions might have it in their repository (ArchLinux have this patch on AUR) or maybe you already have one - just check is you have -I and -O option. And than, run: unzip -O shift-jis *path to archive*. Same applies to archive with the game itself later.

If the game crashes when entering the Factory in GALAXY Town, applying the patch below might help.

To use Wine with the patch:

  1. copy the text above into a file
  2. download a source release of Wine
  3. unpack the source tarball somewhere
  4. open a terminal
  5. navigate into the source directory
  6. apply the patch (patch -p1 < /path/to/the/patch/file should work)
  7. compile Wine

The patch has been tested on Wine 1.7.45 and Wine 1.7.46.

The Factory's BGM file appears to be a bit corrupted, the crash is due to how Wine handles MP3 files with corrupt/missing headers.

Linux Installation Instructions for EasyRPG Player

  1. Install the easyrpg-player package or build from source code.
  2. Copy the "easyrpg-player" executable to the folder which /ゆめ2っき/ is in (e.g. ~/Desktop/ゆめ2っきver0.107a/). One can think of this executable as taking the place of the "start.exe" Windows executable in the same folder.
  3. Run the "easyrpg-player" executable and select ゆめ2っき from the menu.

The executable may be found at /usr/bin/easyrpg-player or /usr/local/bin/easyrpg-player, try:

which easyrpg-player
  • (Optional) Download the RTP from RPG Maker
  • Extract the files in the RTP folder using wine.
LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 wine RPG2000RTP.exe
  • Locate the files and copy the files in the RTP folder to the game's data folder (~/Desktop/ゆめ2っき/) so that EasyRPG Player can use the files. They may be found at ~/.wine/drive_c/users/rosemary/AppData/Roaming/KADOKAWA/Common/RPG Maker 2000 RTP. The files in the "Panorama" and "Chipset" folders might be used occasionally, but it should be fine to skip this step. Be sure to merge the folders so there are no duplicate folders (directories with the same name but different capitalization, such as "GameOver"). When there are duplicate file conflicts, skip instead of replacing.
