The Nefarious Chessboard is an area accessible from a chess piece in Pillar Ark.

Map of Nefarious Chessboard.

Features

Nefarious Chessboard is a small looping area with looping red and green tiles. Various orange chess pieces are scattered throughout the area, casting demon-like shadows. There are patches of black tiles which cannot be crossed. Orange tiles bridge some of these patches; while shrunken, orange tiles cannot be crossed. Above the entrance is an inaccessible piece of cheese.

East from the entrance is a purple X-shaped teleporter connecting to Thrift Shop. Southwest from the entrance is another purple rune-shaped teleporter connecting to Topdown Dungeon. Another rune has a red construction sign next to it.

Southeast from the entrance is an unfinished connection, and further southeast is a red switch between two chess pieces. Flipping this switch inverts the map. The red and green tiles will be swapped, and the music will change to a more ominous tune. The chess pieces turn grey, resembling their shadows, which now resemble the original pieces. The orange tiles will also become grey, and the shrunken tiles will grow, allowing them to be crossed. Interestingly, the previously harmless Chess Queen NPC will undergo a transformation. Her visage will darken and she will gain glowing red eyes, turning her into a chaser. Getting caught results in being sent back to the entrance from Pillar Ark.

Northwest from the entrance is the path to Apple Prison, which becomes accessible when the map is inverted.

West from the Apple Prison entrance is a large patch of black tiles with a chess piece in the center. Interacting with it causes Urotsuki to make a refusal sound in either state of the chessboard. If you place a marker in this section with the Bat effect, invert the tiles, and then use the Bat effect to fly to it, you will find another teleport rune has taken the place of the chess piece. If text events are enabled, interacting with it causes an abrupt transition to a fake title screen. If you choose the last option, you will be forced to wake up. If you choose the first option, it will display an abnormal version of the opening text, which has a spinning clock and no silhouette. Once the clock disappears, you can press the interact key to be sent to a fake version of Urotsuki's Balcony. Walk up to the edge to see a view of three mountains and a large goopy creature with a halo in the sky. Walking into the bedroom, you'll find it looks different and has an occupied bed, a non-functional TV, and two locked doors. Interact with the wardrobe to be taken to the Fake Apartments.
