The Burning Building is an area accessible from the red gasoline can in Obelisks.
Features
The Burning Building is a modestly-sized non-looping world. It is composed of two distinct areas, encompassing both the exterior and interior of a multi-level building.
Exterior
The exterior is a small area, spanning only a single screen. Here, the towering building facade stands in front of a background of tall flames. The foreground scenery—including the building and the ground in front of it, as well as two palm trees—is colored black, with outlines that slowly blink between red, orange, and yellow. On the ground is a gas can that connects to Obelisks, sitting next to an arrow that points towards the entrance to the interior; both features also change color in sync with the surrounding scenery.
By waiting in the exterior without leaving for six uninterrupted minutes, the Figure in the Flames event will begin. In it, the background music will change into distorted noise as a fullscreen image of Hemlock, a smiling, red and yellow rabbit-like creature with black eyes and a bleeding hole in its forehead, slowly begins to fade in. As the image becomes fully opaque, distorted roaring will play alongside faint screams, before Minnatsuki is forced to return to their room from the spirit world.
Main Area
The main area, comprising the building interior, is composed of a series of platforms and ladders, set in front of a scrolling checkerboard pattern backdrop. It is filled with a variety of large monsters, whose twisted forms are often joined together, sometimes in a violent fashion. Many of the ladders throughout the area are hidden behind these creatures.
The ladder directly north of the entrance from the exterior will bring Minnatsuki to a platform with a vending machine.
Climbing up the next ladder to the east instead will lead to a wider platform. Climbing up another ladder directly to the north will bring Minnatsuki to a red feline creature—named Hotsauce—with a yellow symbol for a face and a mouth at the end of its tail. Interacting with it will transport Minnatsuki to a small annex area, containing a DJ table and another vending machine. Hotsauce is also present here, laying to the left of a smiling yellow rabbit-like creature named Honey, who has two large eyes, a smaller third eye on its forehead, and an eyeball for a tail. Arriving here unlocks the "Phlogiston" book cover.
Interacting with the DJ table will activate the Boombox event, wherein a drumbeat and additional synthesizer tracks are added to the background music, and Honey will take on an even more gleeful expression and begin bobbing its head. Minnatsuki can sit on Hotsauce's side here, which will cause the symbol on its face to change to incorporate a heart shape at the top. Interacting with the DJ table and then sitting on Hotsauce without leaving the annex will cause a bridge to an additional floating platform to appear on the right. Upon the platform is an angular, eye-shaped symbol, upon which is a cube that, upon interaction, grants the "Sun" Menu Theme. Collecting this menu theme also unlocks the "Fire Friends" book cover. Hanging above the platform is a crudely drawn portrait resembling Minnatsuki.
The same platform which led to the area with the boombox also leads up to a door to Tile Complex. To the right, mostly obscured by a red monster's giant head, is a ladder. Climbing it will take Minnatsuki to Desk Passage.
Continuing to the right, Honey can be seen again behind the walkway. To the right of Honey is a an orange monster that resembles a round, disembodied head. Its tongue—which takes the form of a four-legged myriapod-like creature with six eyes, sharp teeth, and a red spike at its rear—sticks out of its open mouth. Crawling up the tongue will lead to Sanguine Plains. Climbing down the ladder between Honey and the orange monster leads to a platform that is, on the western side, partially stuck inside the mouth of another orange monster with a long neck and yellow teeth. Entering this monster's mouth will lead to Spiral Purgatory.
