NASU is the Famicom game found in Madotsuki's Room. It is named after the Japanese word for eggplant.
Gameplay
NASU is a very simple arcade game in which the objective is to catch falling eggplants in the player character's mouth. Failing to catch a single eggplant will result in a game over. Each eggplant is worth 10 points. The player of NASU is a red character largely resembling a bird or Tengu.
The player must walk left and right to reach the eggplants, then catch them by jumping by pressing the interact key. Holding the menu key exits the game.
For every eggplant collected, there is a 1/50 chance for a pink bonus eggplant to appear, bouncing from the left side of the screen to the right. Eating the bonus eggplant is worth 300 points, and it does not result in a game over if missed. It is possible to get an additional 1,000 bonus points by catching a normal and bonus eggplant at the same time.
By performing a button combination nearly identical to the Konami Code (left, left, right, right, up, down, up, down) in NASU's title screen, a cheat mode is activated. It replaces the player character's head with an eggplant, and greatly improves the chances of a bonus eggplant appearing. Playing NASU with this cheat enabled will not update the high score.
Trivia
- The NASU minigame had a mobile port on the Apple App Store and Google Play, released on November 22 and 25, 2013, respectively. There was a page advertising the app on yumenikki.net.
- The Thumbs.db files of version 0.04 contain images of a scrapped game called Severed Head PK which could have appeared alongside NASU.
- The eggplant head cheat mode may reference the game Kid Icarus for the Famicom, where some enemies transform the player into an eggplant with legs.
- According to unused code in version 0.09, the NASU player character was originally going to appear in the Dense Woods A and Windmill World, transporting the player to FC World C in an unused event called NASU Link.
- If the player collects a pink bonus eggplant while a purple eggplant hits the ground, the pink eggplants will be invisible in the next NASU game that is played. Despite this, they can still be collected while invisible, and all subsequent bonus eggplants collected after one invisible eggplant will be visible.
