The KALIMBA (カリンバ, Karinba) are a group of characters resembling border decorations found in some Paracas textiles that appear during the KALIMBA TV Channel event.
Overview
The KALIMBA are armless humanoids, each having a warm color scheme. They have a slightly hunched position and tilted heads, with snake-like tongues or vomit coming from their mouths as they scroll past each other in two straight lines.
When the television in Madotsuki's Dream Room is turned on, there is a 1/8 (12.5%) chance that a KALIMBA face will appear on the television instead of an eye, and the screen will fade to black before showing the two rows of KALIMBA scrolling past to kalimba music.
In YUMENIKKI –DREAM DIARY–, they appear as a tapestry in Madotsuki's dream room, replacing a tapestry which normally depicts the Nexus background.
Trivia
- The Paracas-like characters seen in the event have a long serpentine tongue, which could depict a supernatural transformation occurring after death from a back-bent human figure to an ancestor, a common theme found in Paracas burial textiles.[1]
- Their name comes from their picture file and soundtrack, both of which are simply titled "KALIMBA", the instrument used in the song. A kalimba is a type of thumb piano and a modernized version of the mbira, a traditional instrument used by the Shona people of Zimbabwe.
- KIKIYAMA, the creator of Yume Nikki, also made a full-length version of the song before they started working on the game. This is the only full-length song other than the FC House theme, though the full version of KALIMBA is not heard in-game.
