The Severed Heads are characters appearing in one of the rooms of White Desert A.

Overview

The Severed Heads are grotesque, monochrome, floating heads that fly by at the end of one of the paths in the White Desert in an event. Only one of the heads will appear at a time, with one being a woman with flowing hair and the other being a balding man with dark hair on the sides of his head.

In the White Desert A, the player can find a Dave Spector near a looping tunnel. By stabbing the Dave Spector with the Knife effect and then heading through the tunnel's right hole, you will be taken to a path that ends in a small building. Entering the structure will cause the Severed Heads to fly overhead in a spinning motion, and exiting the structure will cause them to quickly fly away into the distance. The heads also do not react to any effects.

Trivia

  • Interestingly, the Severed Heads are named "UFO" and "UFO2" in the game's files. While they do not resemble typical depictions of UFOs, they do move in a similar spinning manner to the UFOs seen around the game.

Theories

An image reconstruction of one of v0.04's Severed Head PK pictures.

Some fans have speculated that the Severed Heads are intended to represent the parents of Madotsuki, or someone else related to her. This, along with their slightly blood appearance, has led some to interpret this as evidence of some sort of accident or other disturbing event in Madotsuki's past that resulted in their death. This appears to fit well with the speculated theme of traffic accidents present in the game. The heads only appearing when Madotsuki is inside the building could be a representation of her not wanting to confront this trauma after remaining in her room.

The heads may also be included due to a scrapped minigame, snippets of which can be found in the Thumbs.db files of version 0.04. Said snippets show images of a scrapped Famicom minigame named Severed Head PK in which the player seemingly kicks severed heads into a soccer net. It's possible that the Severed Heads were intended to be imagery that resulted from Madotsuki playing the game, much like how NASU appears to affect her dreams. This minigame may also be an explanation for other aspects of the dream world which appear to be associated with the severed head motif such as the Mouth Monsters, the Henkei Shita, and the background of Eyeball World, though this explanation is left blurred due to the minigame not being implemented.
