River Complex is an area accessible from the pink bear in River Road A.

Map of the River Complex.
Map of the Buddha Face Labyrinth.

Features

This dark complex is made up of many winding corridors and pillars, and is home to various strange creatures, which make noises if you interact with them. The Lantern effect is only effective in certain parts of the complex, and the Rainbow effect can be used to briefly scout.

From the door outside, you will enter into a large hall filled with pillars, where the very left side of the hall has an isolated Buddha face sculpture.

From the entrance hall, going down to the southwest will take you through a long, narrow corridor into the lower part of the area.

Lower Rooms

In the lower half of the complex there are many doors leading to various places to explore. A standard red vending machine can be found to the east.

To the southwest is a corridor lined by large red curtains, leading to a curtained hallway with two hanging pieces of meat and a large pink bull blocking the way to a door on the other side of the room. The Chainsaw effect can be repeatedly used to slaughter the bull. Using the Wolf effect to howl at the bull will make it move forward and let out a loud 'moo'. Doing this until it moves offscreen will let Urotsuki access the door at the end of the hallway, which leads to a large area filled with many balconies and doors. If you initially entered from the left side of the room, the bull will block the hallway and the connections beyond it.

From the entrance, going through the rusted door at the end of the balcony will take you to a large store-room filled many hanging pieces of meat and a green man with a camera for a head, and going through rusted door in the middle of the balcony will take you to a similar area connected by ladders.

Making your way down the ladders from the middle door, the first room on the left will take you to an empty locker room consisting of nothing but a weird purple fuzz-like creature, and the door at the very bottom will take you to a small room with a few lockers, a strange squid-man and a yellow kettle. The squid-man turns green when using the Crossing effect, and can be set on fire using the Lantern.

Going down and to the far right will bring Urotsuki to a room in which she encounters another pink bull. First, she sees it knelt down to rest in a room where red arrows point west toward the door. Continuing east will lead into the next room, in which Urotsuki encounters three more pink bulls: standing, standing and bleeding from large, incised wounds, and collapsed on the floor. At the end of this room is the entrance to the Buddha Face Labyrinth.

If entering from the Buddha Face Labyrinth, head past the pink bulls and climb up the first ladder, then down the next ladder. At the end of this section lies an empty locker room containing a pink telephone. Using the Telephone effect on this telephone will send you to Virtual City. Keep in mind, you cannot access Sierpinski Maze and Rainy Apartments by using this connection. In addition, Shimako will be absent from Reflecting Electron Zone. The Virtual City connection cannot be accessed with the Pet Telephone mask.

Back to the main area, to the south is a short corridor with a red arrow on the wall, pointing out a doorway at the end that leads down a long dark staircase to an even longer ladder. At the bottom of the ladder is a bricked area, with strange organic-looking graffiti decorating the walls. If the Lantern, Twintails, Cake, or Insect effect is equipped, a section of the organic matter will begin looking around. If the Insect effect is used, it will move faster.

Continuing to the left through a small room with a log and two translucent Sprite-like orbs, you will find a very tall room housing a large chairlift, with a blue creature sitting over in the corner. Attempting to chainsaw the creature will only make it go transparent for a few seconds, not kill it.

Following the instructional arrow on the floor, walking around the chair and interacting with it from the left side will let Urotsuki ride the chairlift up to the top of the room where there is a door to Christmas World, with snow spilling out of it onto the lift platform. Riding the chairlift will remove masks.

Once again in the main area, to the west is a door leading to a small platform with a staircase in the upper right corner, and a ladder leading down into an empty waterway. Going up the stairs here will take you to a small shack outside the storage area on the Highway.

Buddha Face Labyrinth

The Buddha Face Labyrinth seems to be a small sub-section of River Road A, made of several halls with walls lined with disturbing faces resembling the face of the Buddha, that perpetually laugh at Urotsuki. It is possible that the disturbing electronic sound that makes up the music is meant to be their laughter. You can chainsaw the faces, but doing so may get you trapped in an isolated section of the River Complex which has one of these faces.

Two of the Buddha heads have faces that are blanked out to resemble a door; You enter from one of them.

If you enter from Smiling Trees World, go left, up three rows, then left to find the other open face, which leads to the area with the caged pink bulls. After you exit the bull room and climb up the ladder, descend the next ladder and head through the doors to find the phone that connects to an isolated section of Virtual City if the Telephone effect is equipped.

Trivia

  • In older versions of the game, the sprite of the bull blocking most of the area's lower section used to strongly resemble the one found in the video game Mother 3.
