Madotsuki (窓付き, lit. windowed) (pronounced /ma.do.tsɯ.ki/) is the playable protagonist of Yume Nikki. She is one of the few characters in the game with an official name.

Madotsuki is the player character in Yume Nikki. Fans speculate that she is young, anywhere from nine to fourteen years old, although arguments can be made for any age. One notable argument is that she is "chibi" style and probably no younger than 16 if she lives alone. Madotsuki is the only character with an official name, since characters require a name for the menu screen in RPG Maker games.
Overview
Madotsuki is the character the player controls through the game. She has brown hair done into twin braids with red hairclips, and an expression only consisting of two closed (or squinted) eyes. She wears a pink long-sleeve sweater with a window-like design consisting of a red border and a 3-by-2 grid pattern of gray and white squares. She also wears a dark purple skirt and bright red shoes.

Real Life
Most of her identity and life are entirely left up to the player's interpretation, with any official hints of these factors being shown in abstract and vague forms during her dreams. Although there is no indication of her age given in the game, she is often depicted as a young person in official media, likely in her pre- or early-teenage years.
Not much is known about the life of this girl - only what can be seen in-game can be considered canon.

Madotsuki doesn't have much to do in her room. Her TV doesn't receive any channels (no more support for analog signals would explain the test screen, a possible prediction from 2004), so she can only play her single game, Nasu. She can go outside on the balcony, but the balcony itself must be rather high, and her view always seems to be blocked by fog.
Her life in the real world (or at least what the player gets to see) is all confined to her small room. She can go out to her balcony, play NASU on her Famicom console, sit at her desk and write in her diary, or go to sleep in her bed, with the latter having the most significance due to allowing the events of the game to take place.

The only thing that is generally accepted among fans is the that Madotsuki is a hikikomori, or shut-in. This is supported by her refusal to leave her room- instead, she simply shakes her head.

The word "Madotsuki" means "windowed", as in to have a window (like a windowed house). The name appears in the menu as the name of the player character, and (in the Japanese original version) is one of the two instances of kanji writing in the game. The only other time kanji is used is for the message that appears when sitting in Madotsuki's desk chair in the dream world.

Dream World
"Madotsuki" is not a word used as a name in Japan. It may not even be her true name at all: it could be thought of as being a metaphor of the character as the player's 'window' into the dream world or the game itself rather than a literal name. It could also be a way to preserve the game's theme of loneliness by giving the character a functional, dehumanizing name rather than a personal name. The name "Madotsuki" is also similar to the colloquial Japanese term for 'windower', a person who spends a long time looking out the window; that is, a daydreamer, which fits with the game's theme of dreaming.
Little is known either, of how Madotsuki feels in the dream world. Some effects seem to show her unhappiness (e.g. knife), however, since the player ultimately controls Madotsuki, it is unknown whether Madotsuki would use it on her own.

Fan Speculation
It has been noted that when her name in romaji is reversed (Madotuki in Kunrei-shiki romanization), it becomes Ikutodam: 行くと駄目 or 行くとダメ ("iku to dame"), a commonly used phrase that means "it is useless to go/leave." This may be a coincidence, though it also eerily describes Madotsuki's state of living, in which she refuses to leave her room, or it may represent Madotsuki not wanting to leave her dreams, as they are far more expansive and interesting than her single real-world room.

Madotsuki's Dreams
Elements in Madotsuki's dream world appear to hint at various aspects of her character: her mental and emotional state, her past experiences, her interests, etc. Various aspects of the game such as the effects and events seem to hint at these the most. Some appear to have a cheerful, silly, or whimsical feel to them, such as the Neon effect and the Witch's Flight event. Others seem to show a more dark, violent, or unnerving side such as the Severed Head effect and the Uboa event.

Depression
The overall atmosphere of the dream world appears disturbing in nature, typically made up of dark voids only using a parallax image to depict the background, such as in worlds like Eyeball World and Forest World. Despite this, deeper dream worlds appear to give off a more positive or relaxing aura such as the Sky Garden or FC Field.
It is possible she is depressed, and the dreams are caused by her medication. (REM rebound, common for low dosages and withdrawal, or longer REM cycles.) Depression would explain her images of despair, hopelessness and end-game tendancies.

Gender issues
It is also possible that Madotsuki may just be a typical lucid dreamer trying to find a release by exploiting her dreams for fun and self-discovery, as shown by her ability to know she is dreaming simply by feeling for any physical stimuli after pinching her cheek.
Due to the recurring images of orifices, blood and a road with womb-like creatures, with possibly other things, and the fact that Madotsuki uses both the men's and women's restrooms in her dreams without hesitation, Madotsuki may feel gender troubled. This can be taken in either direction. She could be a male to female transgender living as a female or a female who feels male. However, it seems to lean toward MTF due to KyuuKyuu-Kun, who looks like a phallus followed by a disturbing face in the shape of a penis head, complete with a possible urethra. This would mean she hates her penis. On another note, she may be afraid of growing up and menstruating.

Rape
Trivia
A theory that uses opposing interpretations of the facts in the 'gender issues' speculation, it is believed that Madotsuki may have been raped before the events in the game, perhaps leaving her pregnant. There are many creatures with bloated abdomens , one of which she can stab. The location Uboa directs to, has an image that could be interpreted as groping.

*The only time she is seen with her eyes open is when she uses the Cat effect, revealing them to be red. However, many have speculated that this is just a result of the effect, rather than their natural color.
*When the player attempts to perform an action without certain conditions (such as using the Demon effect without any rain), Madotsuki will make one of two small noises indicating she is unable to perform the action. These noises appear to be the phrases "dame" (駄目) and "muri" (無理), which translate into "it's useless" and "it's impossible", respectively. This is the only instance of audible words/phrases in the game.
*An image of a human figure that somewhat resembles Madotsuki appears on a very ancient Paracas poncho. Interestingly, many examples of indigenous imagery can be found throughout the game. *A picture book released in 1993 titled REX Yume Nikki (part of Kadokawa's REX series) features a girl who somewhat resembles Madotsuki on its cover. Interestingly, Kadokawa is the company that made RPG Maker, the engine that was used to make the game.
*Madotsuki's shirt design resembles a simplified version of the CJK character 囧. This character can mean "window," matching Madotsuki's name, or "clear," which could be a small indicator of her personality. It can also be used as an emoticon expressing sadness or shock.
**In addition, her shirt design resembles the emblem of the Japanese Tsuchiya clan, or that of Incan military tunics, which could tie in with the indigenous imagery often seen in the game.

One major evidence supporting this claim is Kyuukyuu-kun, since to reach it, the player must stab a wall with a zipper looking pattern, leaving a bloody vagina-like opening. Then, one is directed to a dark room with only a stairway and Kyukyu-kun, rubbing its pole. Once the player goes through the stairs and enters the door, FACE (jp: 赤の王様, The Red King) appears, waking up Madotsuki. Again, this shows a fear of penises.

The MTF transgender theory can actually be used to further support Madotsuki's relationship to the events leading to FACE and rape. The bleeding orifices could just as easily be a torn anus. KyuuKyuu-kun could be an interpretation of the odd and discomforting, yet pleasant sensation of her getting masturbated by the rapist. In the events following this, she got anally raped, which would be excruciatingly painful and frightening. This would give Madotsuki two reasons to fear penises, enough to cause her to wake up out of fright. (the only other time this happens is when she falls to her death as a witch.)

In this theory, Masada can be interpreted as the rapist due to his crossed eyes, which recurs for negative characters. His walking backwards shows a predetermined fear for Madotsuki, so she could have somehow blackmailed the rapist, her piano teacher. Also bear in mind this character is most associated with beds.

The bloated abdomens may be Madotsuki's decapitated pregnant mother involved in the same accident that mangled the girl whom Monoko is based on. This would be highly traumatising, as her unborn sibling dies as well. The severed heads in the monochrome world could be people who died in the accident, perhaps Madotsuki's mother and father. This speculated sibling could be Monoe.

Madotsuki (窓付き, lit. windowed) (pronounced /ma.do.tsɯ.ki/) is the playable protagonist of Yume Nikki. She is one of the few characters in the game with an official name.
