The White Desert (モノ, Mono) is a deeper location within the dream world.

Features

The White Desert is a large, monochrome desert world consisting of several rooms and areas. Everything within the desert is white (with occasional touches of bright red) and some areas contain a void-like black background or expanse. The areas found within the White Desert vary in appearance, though the main areas consist of expansive terrain with crudely-drawn cacti and bumpy pathways. Its large size makes it home to many notable characters and events, though no effects can be found here. The music is composed of only two sounds: a shuffling sound and a deep bell noise that play at different intervals.

White Desert A

The first White Desert area, White Desert A, consists of several cacti groups and barrier-like tiles that form shapes around the desert. A gate with two hands that resembles the Severed Blue Head can be found in the world's northwest section, which will take the player to Block World in front of a black gate. A hut with an arm-like path can be found in the world's southeastern section, which acts as a one-way warp from White Desert B.

Near the gate is the Eye Box, which can be stabbed with the Knife effect for a 1/30 chance of being taken to a black space with the Eye People. Stabbing the Eye Box again while in the Eye People's world also has a 1/30 chance of sending Madotsuki back to White Desert A.

Standing around the White Desert A has a 1/3600 chance for Takofuusen to fly by, which is rolled every half-second that Madotsuki is in the area. They will fly across the screen accompanied by a drum beat and will not react or change with any effects.

Around the White Desert A are small tunnel-like structures which can be entered. The northmost one houses Monoko, who will distort and appear in her own event when the Stoplight effect is used. The tunnel in the desert's southwestern section can only be properly entered after stabbing the Dave Spector NPC found near it with the Knife effect. After doing so, the tunnel will have a different location depending on which side is entered:

  • Going through the left hole will lead to a large void will nothing but the tunnel back to the White Desert and a single NPC known as Monoe. Locating Monoe within the void will trigger her own event as she appears up-close on the screen before teleporting away.
  • Going through the right hole will lead to a pathway with several notable background elements. Large flames and groups of trees can be seen in the distance while a structure resembling Tokuto-kun can be seen close by with red cords winding through it. A large arm and leg will also appear along the path, which will twitch when stabbed with the Knife effect. Finally, at the end of the path, there is a single structure that can be entered to cause the Severed Heads to appear, though only when Madotsuki is in the building.

White Desert B

The White Desert B consists of several notable rooms, most of which contain larger-than-usual objects and creatures.

When entered from the FC Dungeon, Madotsuki will find herself in the White Desert's Underground Lagoon. Body imagery decorates the walls of the small lagoon, which has black water on its western side. Two eyes are found on the back wall, with one having a shadowy arm coming from its pupil that occasionally moves its fingers. One wall has a set of drooping protrusions that will wiggle when the Cat effect is used. Another wall features a dripping substance that leaves black puddles on the floor. To the very right of the area is an ear-shaped doorway that leads to a stairway up to White Desert B's main area.

The White Desert B's main area is largely blank, only having a few cacti, a one-way pathway to the White Desert A, and a formation of strange eye-like tiles in the room's northeast portion. However, a ring of mountains with strange stalks and a head can be seen, which can only be accessed through a manhole found in the Dense Woods B.

From the Dense Woods B, Madotsuki can access the ring's interior by traveling through a manhole with a red tentacle sticking out. Once entered, she will encounter Roary Straw, who changes appearance depending on how many times the Infinite Road has been looped through. Upon entering the head found in the ring of mountains, Madotsuki will be taken to the Brain Creature. Going beyond this creature will lead to the Thing with the Quivering Jaw, which appears alongside a leaking eye and a head resembling the Buddha.

Uboa's Trap

Uboa's Trap is a section of the White Desert that can only be accessed during the Uboa event. If Uboa has been summoned in Poniko's House and then interacted with, Madotsuki will be taken to a looping trap filled with white water and several mountains. A distorted-looking Uboa can be found in the trap and the Bloody Touching Monster can be seen in the background, looping by as it grasps the five melting mountains seen in the area's landscape.

This part of the White Desert can only be escaped by waking up or using the Medamaude effect.

Trivia

  • Everything in the White Desert has the prefix モノ (mono), including the characters Monoe, Monoko, and Takofuusen, with even the internal name for the area being "Mono". The name of the music that plays in the area, SYA, can also translate to mono, in this case being "person" (者). This could stand for the word monochrome, or it can also mean "thing" in Japanese (もの).
  • While it is one of the largest locations in the game overall (being second to the Wilderness, the largest single map in the game belongs to Hell. However, this location has the most unique characters.
  • Some fans have theorized that the location is based on drawings that Madotsuki could have drawn as a kid, due to its crude appearance. The area's aesthetic resembles the drawings found in the Sewers.
  • In the files of the game, there are sprites for a monochromatic Madotsuki that have no FC counterpart, which has led some fans to believe that this would have been her appearance while exploring the area rather than a collectible effect.
  • In older versions of the game, the black gate in Block World that leads to this area led to a removed event instead.
  • The White Desert B section outside of the mountain ring is the deepest area within the game, requiring the player to visit at least eight other dream worlds/areas (excluding the Nexus) in order to enter it.
  • Found in the Panorama folder's Thumbs.db file in version 0.09, two background images of scrapped maps can be found. Below are recreations of them by Vasili of #LaInvestigaciónYN:
