Japan Town is an area accessible from a ladder in the Sewers.
Features
Japan Town is a street through quite a large old Japanese town, full of residential activity, with a friendly old-world charm. The area consists of a main street lined with old Japanese buildings and shops, and various minor characters going about their daily lives in the streets. Kanban Otoko, the Wheel Girl, and News Man can be seen in this area. If Urotsuki sits next to News Man on the bench and wait a few seconds, a bus will come along and transport her to the Maiden Outlook. The bus will not appear while the Crossing effect is active and will not stop to pick Urotsuki up if News Man has disappeared.
There are a number of areas to access from here, such as The Hotel, found partway through town, and The Back Alley next to it.
Further west is the Box Shop, home to the Box Shop Keeper, a blue robot who sometimes looks out of his shop and nods when interacting with him. If Urotsuki uses the Fairy effect near him he will applaud. He will also bow at Urotsuki if she interacts with him with the Maiko effect equipped.
Interacting with the red mailbox outside the Box Shop will teleport Urotsuki onto an exhibit table in the Dark Museum.
Through the wooden door next to the shop is a small alley featuring graffiti of a pastel city on the wall. Using the Glasses effect here will reveal a hidden door leading inside the Box Shop next to the pile of garbage. If the shopkeeper is sitting inside, Urotsuki can join him using the Boy effect, and he will squint at her happily.
To the left of the box shop, going through the gap in the bushes closest to the pole will lead to an alley behind the hotel. Going through the connecting alley here joins up with the main part of the back alley, where Urotsuki can access the hotel using the back door at the right end of the alley.
At the very edge of town a black building with a neon sign outside leads down into the left side Sewers. Traveling to the left will eventually lead Urotsuki to The Underground Bar.
Various places around Japan Town will give Urotsuki Money if she is running low (below 500夢); For example, checking the box shop's drawers gives 100夢, and checking the hole between the hedges nearest to The Underground Bar's Sewers entrane will net another 100夢.
Consequences of Peeing on the Wall
Near the entrance of the town is a wall with a dark spot underneath it marked with a drawing of a torii gate. By using the Boy effect, Urotsuki can urinate on the wall, doing this activates many different chaser related events across the dream world.
By urinating on the wall, a Clown chaser will appear in Marijuana Goddess World, the bathroom of the Dark Room, the eyeball ladder in Tapir-San's Place, and the backroom with the fridge in The Hotel. Three flat Shadow Ladies will also appear in Chocolate World and most of the warps in that world will disappear.
The clown chasers will pursue Urotsuki, pushing her around and stealing 100夢 once caught, however most do not trap her anywhere within the dream world, except for the clown who climbs the ladder in Tapir-San's Place.
In order to get rid of the chasers, Urotsuki must get caught by the flat Shadow Ladies in Chocolate World.
The Hotel
A quiet and dark building, featuring dark red floors. The Hotel's attendant is an eyeless Geisha with a big red grin that looks identical to Maiko effect Urotsuki. If Variable #44 is greater or equal to 128, the shopkeep will not appear.
The lobby contains four doors on all directions, with the south doors being the entrance from the main street. The northern doors lead to a narrow pathway with bouquets strewn around the sides. The room at the end of the path simply contains a desk with a lamp on it, however the room shakes a lot. Using the Glasses effect in this room will reveal several dark shadowy figures clustered around Urotsuki.
Going through the left door leads to a complex of darkened stairways, with doors to the hotel lounge located at the top and a doorway that leads to a room, decorated with various masks, running through the middle of the stairwell. This room and the masks in it change color and saturation every time Urotsuki enters it. The stairs descend down further on the left side, leading to 3 other rooms.
Atop the stairwell is the hotel lounge, where the rooms are located, rented by various shadowy blob people. The individual rooms all have a futon, a chest of drawers, and a bathroom in the southeast corner of the room.
In the third room's bathroom, Urotsuki can change into her swimsuit by interacting with the one on the wall, and take a bath. If she stays in too long, she will be transformed into a white blob creature with black hair. Exiting from the bathroom while in this form reveals that the blob creature that was blocking the mirror has left. Interacting with the mirror will let Urotsuki see what she has become, and eventually, a shadowy blob figure will enter the room and attack Urotsuki. Afterward, Urotsuki will wake up in the bed of the room, still wearing the swimsuit.
In the fourth room, one of the bloody babies from the Train Tracks can be found floating in the room's bath. Unlike the babies from its home world, it does not react to any interaction with it.
At the bottom of the staircase area through the double doors leads to another hotel room, containing a much smaller bathroom. In the room there is a broken closet that will take Urotsuki to the Closet Pinwheel Path upon interaction.
The door on the left leads behind the front desk of the lobby where the Geisha shopkeep is. Attempting to Chainsaw the shopkeep will result in it briefly turning transparent while laughing. If the shopkeep is not behind the counter, Urotsuki can take its place, triggering the Paying Customer event.
The door on the right leads to a room with lots of garbage bags and an openable fridge. If Urotsuki has peed on the wall in the main area, passing near the fridge will make a very fast Clown jump out, chase Urotsuki and steal her money. Going through the brown door here leads out to the hotel's back alley.
The Back Alley
Next to the hotel, a dark back alley edged by water can be accessed, leading out behind the town. There is a connecting alley halfway down which will take Urotsuki to the alley behind the hotel, being watched from the water by three shadowy squids.
On the far right the back alley leads out into a dark looping area decorated with ladders, streetlamps and parts of various buildings. Heishi-Kun can be found here, who gives Urotsuki the Plaster Cast effect when interacted with. If Urotsuki chainsaws him, the atmosphere changes and flat Shadow Ladies will appear and chase her. If they catch Urotsuki, she will be trapped in an isolated area of the Sewers.
The Underground Bar
The black building at the very edge of town leads down into the dark side of the Sewers. This area can be lit up with the Lantern effect and features Marijuana Goddess lanterns and a stream where lotus flowers slowly float by.
Located at the very left of this area is The Underground Bar, which will be locked if the Child effect is equipped. A slowed-down version of the Buddha Rave song fades in as Urotsuki approaches the door. Inside the bar, Masutaa the bartender shakes his cocktail mixer and a blue fire NPC enjoys a cocktail next to a man who has passed out drunk. Chainsawing the man will turn him into another blue fire NPC.
If Urotsuki sits down on the middle stool near Masutaa then waits, he will look at Urotsuki and serve her drinks for 200夢 each, unlocking wallpaper #103. If Urotsuki drinks too much, the bar will start to warp and distort, eventually she passes out and starts seeing images of people that she has killed before being sent back outside the Sewers.
The NPCs that appear in the room will only appear if they are characters that can be killed permanently, or have been killed in the current dream session, those NPCs being:
- Oni Musume (replaces the blue flame NPC's spot).
- Both Beret Sisters.
- Tako Otoko.
- The Angel Priest (replaces Blue Beret Twin's spot).
- Hakoko.
- Megusuri Uri.
- The stickman from Christmas World.
- The Seanut from Altantis' Reef (only appears once).
- The Forest Carnival's ringmaster and the purple hatted woman (only one of them can appear at once, if both have been killed, only the ringmaster will appear).
Directions
- The Nexus → Marijuana Goddess World → Dark Room → Sewers → Japan Town
- The Nexus → Red Streetlight World → Gray Road → Train Tracks → Closet Pinwheel Path → Japan Town
- The Nexus → Geometry World → Saturated Eyeball Zone → Spelling Room → Japan Town
If the connection from Urotsuki's Dream Apartments to Dark Museum is active:
- The Nexus → Urotsuki's Dream Apartments → Dark Museum → Japan Town
Trivia
- The Box Shopkeeper bears a resemblance to the blue robot in The Hand Hub.
- The name of the dream world in Japanese points out the similarities between its appearance and that of the 60s, or the middle Shōwa era in Imperial Calendar. This is present in the pre-modern style of the place, people's garments, bell noises, the traditional hotel, and the red mailbox.
- The shield of the Watanabe family can be seen depicted on the wall near the News Man. It can be recognizable as three big black circles over a horizontal line.
- The Wheel Girl is a possible reference to the Hoop and Stick Girl from LSD Dream Emulator.
