This page is missing information. You can help YumeWiki by expanding it. Details: Glitches unrelated to the chair are missing, such as the Snowman direction lock. Also, key presses should use a template. See the talk page. |
There are a variety of glitches in Yume Nikki. All glitches are caused by an oversight of allowing the player to use the menu (and therefore equip effects) while seated in the chair of Madotsuki's dream room.
Speed Glitches
A useful set of glitches that increase Madotsuki's walking speed. Although Madotsuki will usually remain in her normal sprite (with some exceptions, such as when visiting FC Worlds), the glitch will be active. The Bicycle is the most commonly used effect for this, as it allows for up to eight times speed.
Madotsuki will sit if 1 is pressed, but the effect action will happen as well (e.g. with the bicycle, the bell noise will play). Certain effects may cause issues such as glitched movement or even softlocks due to this. Interactions such as entering through the pipes in the Sewers with Midget or being unable to sleep in beds with Bicycle also still occur.
The speed glitch will be removed if you equip any other effects, sit in any chair, or sleep in any bed. The bedroom chair is the only possible exception: if you have the glitch active while in the normal state (no effects), it will maintain your speed if you choose to sit, and even allow you to ride it at higher speeds. Laying the Bicycle egg in the Nexus will also cancel the glitch, but laying any other effect egg will not.
Simple Speed Glitch
Instructions
- Sit in the chair in Madotsuki's dream room
- Open the menu
- Equip any effect
- Face down and press Z to exit the chair.
Speed will quadruple if the chosen effect is the bicycle, and will only double otherwise. Choosing the Severed Head effect will cause you to move at half speed (instead of the normal quarter speed).
Hyperspeed Glitch
A related glitch that is slightly more complicated, but allows the speed increase to stack, allowing for movement up to eight times faster than the walking speed. This is equal to that of Candle World's specially fast Toriningen. There are two ways of performing this glitch.
Instructions
First Way:
- Sit in the chair in Madotsuki's dream room
- Open the menu
- Equip the Bicycle effect
- Face up and press Z to start riding the chair
- Ride the chair into the Nexus
- Press 5 to drop the Bicycle effect, then pick it back up
- Open the menu (you should hear the 'unable' sound effect), and equip any effect
- Return to the dream room. There will be no chair at the desk.
- Go to the desk and sit down on the now invisible chair, then face down and press Z to get up.
Second Way:
- Sit in the chair in Madotsuki's dream room
- Open the menu
- Equip the Yuki-onna effect
- Equip the Hat and Scarf effect
- Face up and press Z to start riding the chair
- Press 1 to turn into a snowman, then press 1 again
- Open the menu (you should hear the 'unable' sound effect), and equip any effect
- Go to the desk and sit down on the now invisible chair, then face down and press Z to get up.
Speed will octuple (x8) if the chosen effect is the bicycle, and will only quadruple otherwise. Choosing the Severed Head effect will cause you to move at normal speed. Note that you can also skip choosing an effect, and apply quadruple speed to Madotsuki's normal state.
Noclip Glitch
Disables most collision, allowing Madotsuki to walk through objects and walls.
Instructions
- Sit in the chair in Madotsuki's dream room
- Equip any of the following effects: Umbrella, Knife, Nopperabou, Towel, or Cat
- Press down, then Z to get off the chair
- Quickly (while Madotsuki is still moving) press 1.
This will allow Madotsuki to walk through anything with any effect equipped. Most loading zones don't trigger, limiting the amount of areas that can be explored. Toriningen can help with accessing other areas, as they can trap you in different worlds, and their traps are easily escaped with the glitch active. Note that Toriningen can only catch you if you are on a normally solid tile, or when sharing a tile with an NPC. Otherwise, they walk through you.
Hell is useful for getting to locations with this glitch, through the use of the three Toriningen and four Nenrikido that substitute normal loading zones. The Henkei Shita located there is also the only way to get to Footprint Path A.
Sitting on any chair or getting into any of the beds deactivates the glitch, returning Madotsuki to normal. Thus, the glitch cannot be utilized in Staircase of Hands or its connections.
Broken Instructions
A somewhat convoluted glitch that allows you to move and enter a new area while the instructions are open, which leads to a variety of related glitches.
Instructions
- Use the simple speed glitch with the Frog effect
- Go to the area you want to do this. It has to be somewhere with a normal loading zone, where you can just walk into the new area.
- Press 1 and you should see Madotsuki sit down, then jump back up.
- Equip the Cat effect.
- Wait for a little while and the game will force you to sit down.
- Press X exactly once, a few seconds after being forced to sit down.
- Press 1, and the menu should open after the animation for the Cat effect is finished.
- Open the instructions (don't close them).
- Wait a few more seconds and then press 1.
- You should hear the sound of the Cat effect, and will be able to move freely.
- Walk into the area mentioned before.
You will now be in a glitched state where the instructions are still stored. Pressing Z when in the game world will reopen the instructions. Note that pressing Z while in the menu will not reopen it.
Effects in Real World
Using the Broken Instructions glitch, it's possible to smuggle in effects into Madotsuki's Room. This involves using the glitch in FC World to use the menu while pinching your cheek to wake up. Besides the Frog and Cat effects for Broken Instructions, the only truly required effect for this sub-glitch is Medamaude. However, it is heavily recommended to obtain the Witch effect as well, as it gives you access to the only reliable method of forcibly waking up.
Instructions
To perform this glitch, you should first drop any effects you wish to use in the dream world as effect eggs in the Nexus. As stated before, the Witch effect is most recommended. You must then follow all the previous steps as usual, but the area in step 2 must be the Static Maze, and you must position yourself right below the ladder to FC House. After walking upwards into the ladder:
- Walk away from the starting point, preferably to the middle of the world. This is to avoid warping accidentally.
- Press X to open the menu.
- Press the interact key to close the instructions.
- Use the menu to hover over the Medamaude effect.
- Press 9 to wake up.
- Immediately after pressing 9, use the interact key to select the Medamaude effect. Once you are in the real world, you should see that Madotsuki is invisible and changing effects while leaving the bed, then appears as her Medamaude effect form.
- Press 1 to use the Medamaude effect, sending you to the Nexus despite you never dreaming.
- Visit an area with a forced wake-up event (listed below). The most reliable method is the Witch's Flight event. To access it, pick up the Witch effect egg you left prior to performing this sub-glitch and equip it.
- The Witch's Flight event in the Mall Rooftop, only accessible if you left the Witch effect as an effect egg in the Nexus prior to performing the glitch.
- The FACE event in Number World's Stairway, only available as a 1/8 chance, and only accessible if you left the Knife effect as an effect egg in the Nexus prior to performing the glitch.
- The Famicom Glitch event in the FC Dungeon, only available as a 1/3 chance, and accessible without any effects, although the Lamp effect can be useful when traversing the dungeon.
- Complete the forced wake-up event to be transported to the real world.
After being forced to wake up, all effects you have in your effects menu should now be available for use in the real world. You can even save the game in this state. Be aware that if you teleport to the dream world using the Medamaude effect, the only way to return to the dream world is a force wake-up event. Also be aware that although the effects stay working if you dream in the bed, they will reset to their nonfunctional real world states once you wake up.
Other Related Glitches
Invisible Madotsuki: This glitch is a side effect of broken instructions, and requires no extra setup beyond what's listed above.
BGM storage: Another side effect of broken instructions. Opening the instructions stops the music, which is set to play again after you close it. If you close the instructions in a different area, the stored music still plays instead of the area's normal track.
Glitched movement: Glitched movement is a glitch that occurs when you close the instructions while sitting down. You will be able to move and your movement will be cycling between 4 of the sitting animation sprites. Facing left will show the first sprite, and it continues in a clockwise fashion. The direction of these sprites is based on the way you face when sitting. This can technically be done without broken instructions by equipping the Hat and Scarf effect in the chair, then using it while moving. However, unlike broken instructions, this will cause you to change to the second sitting sprite (sleep) and freeze your movement after a short while.
There is also a different type of glitched movement. Do steps 1-5 of the glitch, then press 1 to meow and stand back up. Go into any new area and you will be in the sleeping animation sprite, yet able to move freely.
Glitched movement can also be done in the real world. Wake up with the instructions stored, press 1 so you are sitting, then finally press Z to reopen the instructions. Closing it will give you glitched movement. If you save with glitched movement your save will be unplayable.
Broken witch event: If you close the stored instructions during the Witch's Flight event, the game will put you in the center of the screen and allow you to walk around and use the menu. This occurs because the instructions put you in the normal walking state. This glitch causes there to be two Madotsukis you control at the same time: the normal flying picture and the glitched walking player.
