After being forced to wake up, all owned effects become available for use in the real world. The game can also be saved in this state. Teleporting to the dream world using the Medamaude effect will have no way of return besides another force wake-up event. It is important to note that if one of the random wake-up events was available prior to activating this sub-glitch, it will continue to be enabled after teleporting using Medamaude, as the random chance is only reset by sleeping in the bed. In addition, although the effects stay working after sleeping in the bed, they will reset to their nonfunctional real world states after waking up.

There are a variety of exploitable glitches in Yume Nikki. Most glitches are caused by an oversight of allowing the player to use the menu (and therefore equip effects) while seated in the chair of Madotsuki's dream room. Glitches can be used to speed up gameplay, break usual game processes, or irreversibly brick the game.

Speed Glitches

A useful set of glitches that increase Madotsuki's walking speed. Although Madotsuki will usually remain in her normal sprite (with some exceptions, such as when visiting FC Worlds), the glitch will be active. The Bicycle is the most commonly used effect for this, as it allows for up to eight times speed.

Madotsuki will sit if 1 is pressed, but the effect action will happen as well (e.g. with the bicycle, the bell noise will play). Certain effects may cause issues such as glitched movement or even softlocks due to this. Interactions such as entering through the pipes in the Sewers with Midget or being unable to sleep in beds with Bicycle also still occur.

The speed glitch will be removed upon changing effects, sitting in any chair, or sleeping in any bed. The bedroom chair is the only possible exception: if the glitch is active while in the normal state (no effects), it will maintain the speed when sitting. This even allows the player to ride the chair at higher speeds. Laying the Bicycle egg in the Nexus will also cancel the glitch, but laying any other effect egg will not.

Simple Speed Glitch

Speed will quadruple if the chosen effect is the Bicycle, and will double otherwise. Choosing the Severed Head effect will bring the player to half speed (instead of the normal quarter speed).

On the mobile version, the speed glitch can be activated on any seat, by using a slightly different method to equip an effect while taking the seat. The available seats in the game, excluding the chair in Madotsuki's dream room, are the sofa chairs in the Mall, the benches in the Sky Garden, and the seats on the Traincar. Notably, the lattermost seats allow for the speed glitch to be sustained past the Traincar and into the Witch's Island, which isn't possible in other versions.

Instructions:

  1. Sit in the chair in Madotsuki's dream room.
  2. Open the menu.
  3. Equip any effect.
  4. Face down and press interact to exit the chair.

Mobile exclusive method:

  1. Face any chair in the game.
  2. Tap both the menu button and interact button simultaneously.
  3. Select any effect. Madotsuki will equip it after moving into the chair.
  4. Face down and tap the interact button to exit the chair.

Hyperspeed Glitch

Visual guide to the effect egg method of obtaining hyperspeed.

A related glitch that is slightly more complicated, but allows the speed increase to stack, allowing for movement up to eight times faster than the walking speed. This is equal to that of Candle World's specially fast Toriningen. There are two methods to perform this glitch. The snowman method is the faster of the two.

Speed will octuple (x8) if the chosen effect is the bicycle, and will only quadruple otherwise. Choosing the Severed Head effect will bring the player to normal speed. Note that you can also skip choosing an effect, and apply quadruple speed to Madotsuki's normal state.

Effect egg method:

  1. Sit in the chair in Madotsuki's dream room.
  2. Open the menu.
  3. Equip the Bicycle effect.
  4. Face up and press interact to start riding the chair.
  5. Ride the chair into the Nexus.
  6. Press 5 to drop the Bicycle effect, then pick it back up.
  7. Open the menu (the 'unable' sound effect should play), and equip any effect.
  8. Return to the dream room. There will be no chair at the desk.
  9. Go to the desk and sit down on the now invisible chair, then face down and press interact to get up.

Snowman method:

  1. Sit in the chair in Madotsuki's dream room.
  2. Open the menu.
  3. Equip the Yuki-onna effect.
  4. Equip the Hat and Scarf effect.
  5. Face up and press interact to start riding the chair.
  6. Press 1 to turn into a snowman, then press 1 again.
  7. Open the menu (the 'buzzer' sound effect should play), and equip any effect.
  8. Go to the desk and sit down on the now invisible chair.
  9. Face down and press interact to get off the chair.

Noclip Glitch

The noclip glitch enables walking through anything with any effect equipped. Most loading zones don't trigger, limiting the amount of areas that can be explored. Toriningen can help with accessing other areas, as they can trap Madotsuki in different worlds, and their traps are easily escaped with the glitch active. Note that Toriningen can only catch Madotsuki when standing on any normally solid tile, or when sharing a tile with an NPC. Otherwise, they pass through.

Hell is useful for getting to locations with this glitch, through the use of the three Toriningen and four Nenrikido that substitute normal loading zones. The Henkei Shita located there is also the only way to get to Footprint Path A.

Sitting on any chair or getting into any of the beds deactivates the glitch, returning Madotsuki to normal. Thus, the glitch cannot be utilized in the Staircase of Hands, or any of their connections.

Instructions:

  1. Sit in the chair in Madotsuki's dream room.
  2. Equip any of the following effects: Umbrella, Knife, Nopperabou, Towel, or Cat.
  3. Face down and press interact to get off the chair.
  4. Quickly (while Madotsuki is still moving) press 1.

Performing the noclip glitch on the mobile version has the potential to softlock the game when pressing 1. This can be fixed by switching effects.

The mobile version has an additional method that allows the glitch to be activated on any seat or bed. This is the only way the player can use noclip in the Mall rooms, Spaceship bedroom, and the Traincar. Using it in the Traincar can let the player sit on the three out-of-bounds seats.

Mobile exclusive method:

  1. Face any chair in the game.
  2. Tap both the menu button and interact button simultaneously.
  3. Select any of the following effects: Umbrella, Kitchen Knife, Faceless, Towel, or Cat. Madotsuki will equip it after moving into the chair.
  4. Face down and tap the interact button to exit the chair.
  5. Quickly (while Madotsuki is still moving) tap 1.

Broken Instructions

A somewhat convoluted glitch that allows you to move and enter a new area while the instructions are open, which leads to a variety of related glitches.

Instructions:

  1. Go to the area you want to do this. It has to be somewhere with a normal loading zone, where you can just walk into the new area.
  2. Equip the Cat effect.
  3. Press menu and any directional key simultaneously.
  4. Press 1 while Madotsuki is still moving. The menu should open after the animation for the Cat effect is finished.
  5. Open the instructions (don't close them).
  6. Keep pressing 1 until you hear the sound of the Cat effect. You will be able to move freely afterwards.
  7. Walk into the warp.

There is also an alternate method that was the first method discovered. Unlike the previous method, it does not involve precise key presses, but it requires more set up.

Alternate instructions:

  1. Perform the simple speed glitch with the Frog effect.
  2. Go to the area you want to do this. It has to be somewhere with a normal loading zone, where you can just walk into the new area.
  3. Press 1 and you should see Madotsuki sit down, then jump back up.
  4. Equip the Cat effect.
  5. Wait for a little while and the game will force you to sit down.
  6. Press menu exactly once, a few seconds after being forced to sit down.
  7. Press 1, and the menu should open after the animation for the Cat effect is finished.
  8. Open the instructions (don't close them).
  9. Keep pressing 1 until you hear the sound of the Cat effect. You will be able to move freely afterwards.
  10. Walk into the warp.

You will now be in a glitched state where the instructions are still stored. Pressing interact when in the game world will reopen the instructions. Note that pressing interact while in the menu will not reopen it.

Effects in Real World

Using the broken instructions glitch, it is possible to smuggle in effects into Madotsuki's Room. This involves using the glitch in FC World to use the menu while waking up. The glitch is not possible to activate in the mobile version due to differences in how the menu functions.

Besides the Cat effect for broken instructions, the only truly required effect for this sub-glitch is Medamaude. However, it is heavily recommended to obtain the Witch effect as well, as it grants access to the only reliable method of forcibly waking up.

Instructions:

It is important to drop any effects that is needed for use in the dream world as effect eggs in the Nexus. As stated before, the Witch effect is most recommended. The previously listed steps must then be followed as usual, but the chosen area must be the Static Maze, and the glitch should be activated while the player is right below the ladder to FC House. After walking upwards into the ladder:

  1. Walk away from the starting point, preferably to the middle of the world. This is to avoid warping accidentally.
  2. Open the menu.
  3. Press interact to close the instructions.
  4. Use the menu to hover over the Medamaude effect.
  5. Press 9 to wake up.
  6. Immediately after pressing 9, press interact to select the Medamaude effect. Once in the real world, Madotsuki should be invisible and changing effects while leaving the bed, then appears as her Medamaude effect form.
  7. Press 1 to use the Medamaude effect, sending Madotsuki to the Nexus despite never dreaming.
  8. Visit an area with a forced wake-up event (listed below). The most reliable method is the Witch's Flight event. To access it, pick up the Witch effect egg left prior to performing this sub-glitch and equip it.
    • The Witch's Flight event in the Mall Rooftop, only accessible if the Witch effect was left as an effect egg in the Nexus prior to performing the glitch.
    • The FACE event in Number World's Stairway, only available as a 1/4 chance, and only accessible if the Knife effect was left as an effect egg in the Nexus prior to performing the glitch.
    • The Famicom Glitch event in the FC Dungeon, only available as a 1/3 chance, and accessible without any effects, although the Lamp effect can be useful when traversing the dungeon.
  9. Complete the forced wake-up event to be transported to the real world.

Other Related Glitches

Invisible Madotsuki: This sub-glitch is a side effect of broken instructions, and requires no extra setup beyond what's listed above. It activates when first moving to another area.

BGM storage: Another reliable side effect of broken instructions. Opening the instructions stops the current BGM and memorises it to play it again after you close it. If you close the instructions in a different area, the stored music still plays instead of the area's normal track.

Glitched movement: This glitch occurs if the instructions are closed while sitting down. The player will be able to move, but Madotsuki will be cycling between 4 of the sitting animation sprites. Facing left will show the first sprite, and it continues in a clockwise fashion. The direction of these sprites is dependent on the direction Madotsuki was facing when sitting. This can technically be done without broken instructions by equipping the Hat and Scarf effect in the chair, then using it while moving. However, unlike broken instructions, this will cause Madotsuki to change to the second sitting sprite (mope) after fifteen seconds, freezing movement.

There is also a different type of glitched movement. After following steps 1-5 of the glitch, pressing 1 to meow then moving to any new area will place Madotsuki in the moping animation sprite, yet able to move freely.

Glitched movement can also be done in the real world. Waking up with the instructions stored, pressing 1 to sit, then finally pressing interact to reopen the instructions will cause glitched movement. Saving with glitched movement will make the save unplayable.

Broken witch event: If the stored instructions are closed during the Witch's Flight event, the game will put the player in the center of the screen in a normal state, allowing movement and use the menu. This occurs because closing the instructions forces the player into the normal walking state. This glitch causes there to be two Madotsukis at the same time: the normal flying picture and the glitched walking player.
