Toriningen (鳥人間, "bird-humans") are a recurring group of characters in Yume Nikki.

Overview

How the three types of Toriningen appear as lunatics. Their eyes shift back and forth as they walk.

The Toriningen are tall, humanoid characters with long snouts and squinted eyes. They come in three variations, each with a different hairstyle: pigtails, a ponytail, or bobbed hair. The three types also wear different outfits, depending on their hairstyle: the pigtails Toriningen wear a brown striped shirt with long sleeves, blue pants, and brown shoes; the ponytail Toriningen wear a purple long-sleeved dress shirt, a patterned pink skirt, and gray shoes; and the bobbed hair Toriningen wear a purple striped dress with blue sleeves and green shoes.

When in their normal state, the Toriningen do not harass Madotsuki and wander about like normal NPCs. If stabbed with the Knife effect, however, they will turn into their "lunatic" forms instead of dying. In their lunatic forms, their eyes turn bright pink and their pupils move around wildly. They also stick out their tongues in this form. Some Toriningen are always in their lunatic state, even if Madotsuki does not stab them.

When in their lunatic form, they will pursue Madotsuki until she is caught, sending her to an isolated area in one of the other dream worlds. The only way to escape these isolated sections is by waking up or using the Medamaude effect.

If one Toriningen is stabbed and turned into the lunatic form, all of the other sane Toriningen will become lunatic as well. Being caught by an enraged Toriningen will cause all of them to revert to their normal state, which can be seen when using the Medamaude effect.

Toriningen that are lunatic from the beginning of a dream session are inconsistent; the lunatic Toriningen in the Checkered Tile Path and the igloo of Snow World will also cause enraged Toriningen to revert to their normal state, but other Toriningen that are always lunatic do not revert lunatic Toriningen to normal after catching Madotsuki. Waking up always resets the enraged Toriningen.

Lunatic Toriningen can be avoided by using the active function of the Triangle Kerchief effect. They will look around for Madotsuki and move somewhat randomly. Interacting with one directly will cause her to be aware of your presence. Toriningen can also be immobilized using the Stoplight effect, which freezes them in place when the light is red. The Bicycle effect helps Madotsuki outspeed most of the Toriningen.

If the player sleeps in a bed, any lunatic Toriningen will slow down and move completely randomly, as if she has lost Madotsuki. Toriningen also hesitate in their movements when they first turn lunatic. Interrupting their movement in any way, or hiding using the Triangle Kerchief effect or a bed, will reset this hesitation. This includes using the Cat effect to attract them closer. Due to the Cat effect also freezing them in place for a short while, this paradoxically allows the Cat effect to put some space between Madotsuki and a lunatic Toriningen.

Locations

Toriningen are spread diversely throughout numerous dream worlds, appearing in many different locations.

Face Carpet Plaza

A lunatic, ponytail Toriningen is found near the center of the map. It will trap Madotsuki in the Neon Tile Path.

Snow World

A sane, bobbed Toriningen is found near a solitary igloo. Traps Madotsuki in Hell.
A lunatic, bobbed Toriningen is found inside one of the five grouped igloos. She traps Madotsuki in Hell. Only appears if the Toriningen wandering around outside is made into a lunatic.

Candle World

A sane, ponytail Toriningen is found near the bed. She also traps Madotsuki in Hell. This Toriningen becomes abnormally fast when made lunatic.

Checkered Tile Path

A lunatic, bobbed Toriningen is found in the first section near the pyramid. Traps Madotsuki in the Docks.

Number World

A sane, pigtails Toriningen is found in the Bed Room. Can trap Madotsuki in the Number World or the Lamp World. Allows Madotsuki to access Mini Hell when made lunatic.

Guillotine World

A lunatic, pigtails Toriningen. Traps Madotsuki in Hell.
A lunatic, ponytail Toriningen. Traps Madotsuki in Dense Woods A.

There is a 1/8 (12.5%) chance that Madotsuki will find herself in a larger variant of this room, inhabited by eight Toriningen instead of the usual two. These all have the same characteristics as the two in the smaller version of the room.

Hell

A lunatic, ponytail Toriningen. Traps Madotsuki in Dense Woods A.

The Wilderness

1-3. The three Toriningen here are having a party and are not capable of being made lunatic, due to the fact that Madotsuki is blocked from reaching them by vegetation.

Mall

A lunatic, pigtails Toriningen is found behind the counter in The Shop. She appears to be friendly and cannot harm Madotsuki. She allows the player to switch between the original menu color scheme and two others, the black and red version being somewhat rare.

Trivia

The Toriningen may be inspired by various yōkai of Japanese folklore:
- Their long snouts may make them based on tengu, birdlike or monkeylike monsters with similar long noses.
- They may also be based on the baku, tapir-like monsters characterized by having a small trunk and having a diet consisting of dreams.
- Another possible inspiration could be the onmoraki, bird-like demons with human faces and glowing eyes.
The Toriningen in Candle World has a comment that says "吹き飛ばし" which means "blow away".
Before Number World took the place of Lamp World in the Nexus in version 0.08, a single Toriningen inhabited Lamp World. When enraged, she would send Madotsuki to Guillotine World instead of an isolated trap, making her the only Toriningen to not completely trap Madotsuki upon catching them, as simply finding the exit in Guillotine World would send Madotsuki back to Lamp World. This allowed Madotsuki to continuously loop through Lamp World and Guillotine World by purposefully getting caught by this Toriningen.
