Guides

Face any direction

You can face any direction you want on any tile in Yume Nikki's dream worlds, using the power of glitches. This guide outlines how to face whichever direction you want on any given tile assuming you can't do it manually by walking into it and/or sitting down.

Dream World

  • Face DOWN by using Cat or Faceless Ghost.
  • Face RIGHT by sitting down with 1 after facing DOWN.
  • Face UP by performing the following:
  1. Equip Frog in the chair
  2. Go to the tile you wish to face UP on and face DOWN on that tile
  3. Use the Frog effect
  4. Wait for Madotsuki to appear sitting down
  5. Equip any effect
  • Face LEFT by equipping the Faceless Ghost effect in the chair then using it.

Using Towel after equipping it in the chair can force you to face UP or LEFT as well, but it's hard to get to a state where you aren't also sitting down, so it's best to use one of the explained methods instead.

FC World

  • Face DOWN by using Cat or Faceless Ghost.
  • Face RIGHT by sitting down with 1 after facing DOWN.
  • Face UP by performing one of the following:
  1. If you can face LEFT on the tile:
    1. Equip Frog in the chair
    2. Go to the tile you wish to face UP on and face LEFT on that tile
    3. Use the Frog effect
    4. Wait for Madotsuki to appear sitting down
    5. Equip any effect
  2. If you cannot face LEFT on the tile:
    1. Equip Towel in the chair
    2. Go to the tile you wish to face UP on
    3. Spam 1 to use the Towel effect until you somehow end up facing UP (yes, I know this sounds silly, but it works)
    4. Wait for Madotsuki to appear sitting down
    5. Equip any effect
  • Face LEFT by equipping Towel in the chair then using it on the tile.

Real World

  • Face DOWN by pressing 9 to pinch your cheek.
  • Face RIGHT by sitting down with 1 after facing DOWN.
  • You cannot face UP on every tile in the Real World.
  • Face LEFT by performing the following:
  1. Go to the Dream World
  2. Perform the Broken Instructions glitch to store the instructions
  3. Press 9 to wake up with the instructions stored
  4. Sit down while facing LEFT on any tile
  5. Press Z and close the instructions
  6. Move to the tile you wish to face LEFT on (you will have glitched movement)
  7. Wait for Madotsuki to tilt her head (second sitting down state)
  8. Press 1 to stand up.

Extension DPL<div style='text-align: center;'><ul><li style="display: inline-block; vertical-align: top; width: 135px;">[[File:YN FACE.png
The FACE event, and by extension the character itself, is only accessible through a Zippertile located near the southeast corner of Number World's first room. Occasionally, the Zippertile will have an unhappy expression, which is determined by a 1/8 chance every time Madotsuki goes to sleep. Using the Knife effect on the tile while it is unhappy will lead to the Number World Stairway, which has the FACE event's door at the end of it.

After opening the Stairway door, the screen will fade to black for a moment. Slowly, a flashing animation that looks like some sort of face or mask fades in, accompanied by a crescendoing rushing sound. FACE cannot be dismissed until it has been playing for approximately ten seconds. When the event ends, the rushing sound momentarily speeds up and Madotsuki awakens abruptly, as if from a nightmare.
a|
Due to the disturbing nature of the event, the existence of FACE has led to fans theorizing about what it could represent or symbolize.

The door that leads to the FACE event looks exactly like the door in Madotsuki's room, the one that leads to the Nexus in the dream world, and the one she doesn't want to leave in the real world. This could possibly mean that FACE is a representation of why Madotsuki does not want to leave her room in the real world, whether it be some sort of trauma or other fear, or simply a really abstract representation of what she thinks will happen to her out there. Another theory is that it is a dream-catcher of some kind, and is reminding Madotsuki that she is dreaming, which is why she wakes up.

Some fans think that FACE may represent one of the many instances of body imagery in the game. Considering that a zipper is used to access the area connected to the FACE event and a phallus-like creature can be seen near the event's door, FACE could be interpreted as some sort of phallic imagery as well, though this is often disputed. Some also think that FACE may be literal in that it represents an actual person's face, possibly even Madotsuki's exaggerated interpretation of her own face due to uncertainty about her physical appearance.

After collecting all 24 proper effects in the game, Madotsuki must return to the Nexus. The player must then drop every last one of her effects in the Nexus room (done by equipping them and pressing the '5' key). If an effect has been dropped, an egg will appear behind Madotsuki. Interacting with the egg will give Madotsuki the effect it holds. If all of the effects are dropped and the Nexus is reentered after going into a different room, the effect eggs will be arranged in a pattern.

Madotsuki must then leave the dream world by pinching herself awake. Upon going to the real-world room's balcony, a set of stairs has appeared, leading over the railing.

Madotsuki climbs the stairs and, upon pressing the 'interact' button, she jumps off the side of the balcony and plummets downward, causing the screen to fade to black.

A heavy, echoing thud breaks the silence, and a pool of blood fades into view. Two Jellyfish from her dream world approach from different directions and surround the red smear as the credits appear, and the mournful ending theme begins to play. By pressing the '1' key, the lower Jellyfish produces a low chime noise. When the '3' key is pressed, the upper Jellyfish produces a high chime noise. When the 'interact' key is pressed again, the screen will slowly fade to black and the player will return to the title screen.
a|
While Madotsuki's suicide in the ending is sudden, it is possible that the events of the ending were already considered by Madotsuki as shown by various aspects of her dream world which seemingly foreshadow her jumping from the balcony. Various dreams and events, such as the Falling Men and Witch's Flight events, could imply Madotsuki contemplated jumping from her balcony even before the events of the game. It could also be theorized that the stairs on the balcony were present all along but possibly repressed by Madotsuki's memory in an attempt to stop herself from jumping as, even in the dream world, imagery of stairs is highly prevalent, either making up the majority of some areas (such as the Staircase of Hands or FC Basement) or occasionally making small appearances in others (such as the White Desert Underground Lagoon and Hell). Her balcony, where the game's ending is witnessed, also appears to support this theory. Notably, a pair of shoes can be seen there. In Japan, it is customary to take off your shoes while going inside a house, though this is also done when entering the afterlife or before ending one own's life. It should also be noted a broom is on the balcony, connecting it to the aforementioned Witch's Flight event and its possible foreshadowing of the ending.

Some fans have theorized that the real world is actually another layer of the many dream worlds in the game. This could explain why Madotsuki's eyes are always closed, how the set of stairs suddenly appeared on the balcony, and why the Jellyfish appear. This would also explain the strange living situation that Madotsuki finds herself in, as she is shown to have no food, water, or bathroom in her room, though these things could easily be ignored if the "real world" she is in was simply a dream. The manga supports this by having Masada tell her that the only way to wake up for real is to kill herself (see below), although this was not made by KIKIYAMA and the manga is an interpretation of the game's events rather than an explanation.

The ending can also be interpreted as a "reawakening" of sorts. Considering the many themes in the game such as death, anxiety, and identity, it's possible that the ending could be interpreted as Madotsuki leaving behind a past self or mindset in favor of a positive one, thus this old mindset symbolically "dies" in the ending.

The Jellyfish could be seen as a sign that even in death, Madotsuki won't escape her nightmares. The Jellyfish, while in the dream world, are also found near Shitai-san, which may show that the Jellyfish are able to sense when or where death occurs. As they are capable of appearing in the dream world and the real world, it's possible they are beings with the ability to traverse both of these planes and are sometimes interpreted as reaper- or god-like characters by the fanbase. It's possible that they are such beings, guiding Madotsuki into the afterlife. They could also be interpreted as humans in the real world spectating what happened to her, appearing as monsters.

When Madotsuki interacts with the "Rave Box", the screen fades to black, and an animation of a strange monkey-like design resembling Aztec- or Paracas-style art appears. It constantly cycles through various "states" very quickly as a lively synth beat plays. Unsuspecting players are likely to be taken aback by the sudden explosion of vibrant color that stands in stark contrast to the bland hues of the Wilderness area. The animation continues until it is dismissed by the player.

There are numerous instances of indigenous imagery blended with postmodern art styles throughout Yume Nikki, including the KALIMBA TV channel, the Nexus's floor pattern, the paintings in Mural World, and various parallax backgrounds (such as the ones of Shield-Folk World and Eyeball World) of which the Aztec Rave Monkey is probably the most popular among fans.

This recurring theme in Madotsuki's dreams may be a result of the Nazcan-style carpet pattern in her room - one of the few sources of visual stimulation in her waking world. Madotsuki may even feel connected with the art of these cultures as they would often have surreal interpretations of dreams in their artwork, especially the Paracas society, and would often hail dreams as important visions.

It is also possible that KIKIYAMA selected this theme as it is a relatively 'alien' art style in most cultures and is therefore an effective way to demonstrate the bizarre nature of dreams to the player, and is also a flexible visual tool that can be seen as either intimidating or humorous depending on the nature of the image and the context of the environment. The Aztec Rave Monkey could be based on Ozomatli, an Aztec monkey considered the servant of the Aztec god Xochipilli, the god of song and dance.

Uboa will replace Poniko's sprite, and the entire house will shake and completely change its form. Madotsuki will be unable to turn the light back on or leave Poniko's house. By walking up to Uboa, Madotsuki will be transported in a looping world with a bleeding creature in the background and the music from the White Desert playing. The only way to get out of this room is to pinch yourself awake or use the Medamaude effect.

If Poniko is killed before the event is triggered, Uboa will not appear, trapping Madotsuki in the shaking reformed house. This will also require waking up or using the Medamaude effect to escape.

Description: Small objects will zoom onto the scene from the distant sky and hover in the air when called repeatedly with the Cat effect. The player has 35 attempts to attract the Mars UFOs before they stop appearing. By the probability, an average of eight UFOs can be summoned each time you enter the screen. If the summit is exited, the UFOs will disappear.

Considering the Falling Men appear around a large pyramid, it may also relate to the presence of indigenous imagery found throughout the game, particularly Aztec imagery. The Aztecs are commonly associated with their religious rituals which took place at the tops of pyramid-like temples serving as places of worship. Human and animal sacrifice was occasionally a part of these rituals, and humans who were used for such events were typically tumbled down the pyramids after being properly sacrificed, as shown in various pieces of Aztec art.

Uboa is a round figure resembling a black mass with a white face. Its normal appearance consists of a smiling face with a squinting left eye and a resting right eye with a crack above it. Its facial appearance changes when interacted with and in Uboa's Trap, morphing into a distorted face will smaller eyes, nostrils, and what appears to be lips or rows of teeth.

Uboa does not appear until the event associated with it is triggered. To activate the event, the player must travel to Poniko's House in the Pink Sea and turn off the lights in her room using the light switch found right beside the door. If the room simply turns dark and Poniko is unchanged, Madotsuki must leave the room, reenter, and turn the lights off again. Continuing this process has a 1/64 chance of changing the room into a distorted version of Poniko's original room, now replacing the blonde girl with Uboa.

Once Uboa is summoned, Madotsuki can not leave the room or flip the light switch back on, with the latter action only causing the screen to flash white. Interacting with Uboa will send the player to Uboa's Trap, a looping area in the White Desert filled with white liquid and a towering, bleeding creature grasping melting mountains in the background. Uboa can also be found here in its distorted appearance. The only way to leave this area is to either pinch Madotsuki awake or use the Medamaude effect.
a|
Due to the unique nature of the Uboa event, it is largely believed to hold some significance to an event that may have happened in the real world involving Madotsuki. The nature of being trapped in a room and being forced to interact with an unpleasant force has led some to believe the event may depict an assault or may be symbolic of Madotsuki isolating herself and having to face her thoughts within her dreams.

Another common interpretation of Uboa is that it may be an alternate form of Poniko, or Poniko may not exist at all and was simply a disguise used by Uboa for an unknown reason. This is evidenced by Uboa taking Poniko's place in her room, no matter where she has walked, and the absence of Uboa after Poniko has been killed, confirming they are the same entity. This interpretation could make Uboa based on the Nuppeppō of Japanese mythology, which is stated in some texts to play tricks on people by disguising as a human and then interacting with real humans to let their guard down, only to surprise them by revealing they are a yōkai. The common interpretation of the Nuppeppō's appearance, a pale creature with a large and wrinkly head, could also somewhat match Uboa in description, especially with their altered appearance in Uboa's Trap.

The player plays as a red character largely resembling a bird or Tengu. They are able to walk left and right across the screen using the left arrow key and right arrow key, respectively. They can also jump by pressing the interact key, which is essential for collecting points. To exit the game, the Esc key is held.

NASU is a very simple arcade game in which the objective is to catch falling eggplants in the player character's mouth. Failing to catch a single eggplant will result in a game over. Each eggplant is worth 10 points.

For every eggplant collected, there is a 1/50 chance for a pink bonus eggplant to appear, bouncing from the left side of the screen to the right. Eating the bonus eggplant is worth 300 points, and it does not result in a game over if not eaten. It is possible to get an additional 1,000 bonus points by catching a normal and bonus eggplant at the same time.
a|
By performing a button combination nearly identical to the Konami Code (left, left, right, right, up, down, up, down) in NASU's title screen, the player character's head is replaced with an eggplant. Doing this greatly improves the chances of a bonus eggplant appearing. While this is likely a reference to the Konami Code, it may also refer to Kid Icarus for the Famicom, where some enemies transform the player into an eggplant with legs.

Playing NASU with this trick enabled will not update your high-score after losing.

a|
As NASU is one of the few activities Madotsuki can partake in while in the real world, it is very likely to have some effect on her dreams.

The NASU game is notable for its bright red colors. The background clouds, the player character, and the game over flash are all bright red. Such a bright color could possibly affect Madotsuki's eyes, possibly causing eye strain. This may appear in the form of the Toriningen, who have bright-pink eyes when in their lunatic form. The Number World Toriningen can also send Madotsuki to the ああああああああ event when made lunatic, which can make either a red "あ" character or a pink, bloodshot eye cover the world's floor. The Toriningen also slightly resemble the NASU player character with their long snouts and humanoid appearance. Other notable instances of bright red include Strober, Big Red, and even the droning likes of Hell and occasional bits of red interrupting the otherwise monochromatic White Desert (with characters like the Bloody Touching Monster).

The flashing red of the game over screen could also carry over into Madotsuki's dreams through the various neon-color and flashing image characters (such as the Shield-Folk, Aztec Rave Monkey and FACE) that appear. It should also be noted that one neon creature, the Neon Parrot, bears a striking resemblance to the NASU player character.

The constant looping tune that plays whenever the NASU game is played may be responsible for the short and looping tracks that play in Madotsuki's dreams, assuming that the music is meant to be diegetic (meaning that the in-game characters can hear the world's music playing).

The inclusion of a Famicom in Madotsuki's room may also reveal the time period the game takes place in: the system was Nintendo's incumbent home console from 1983 to 1990 (though it wasn't formally discontinued until 2003), making it outdated when Yume Nikki first released in 2004. This may indicate that the game takes place sometime in the then-recent past. However, it isn't unusual for someone who grew up in the 1980s to still own and enjoy using a Famicom in the 2000s, and indeed, Madotsuki's television better resembles one contemporary to 2004 than one from two decades prior. This would alternately suggest that the game is set around the time of its release, and that because Madotsuki never leaves her home, the Famicom represents when she began staying indoors.

  • [[File:YN FACE.png

When the event ends, the rushing sound momentarily speeds up and Madotsuki awakens abruptly, as if from a nightmare. a| Due to the disturbing nature of the event, the existence of FACE has led to fans theorizing about what it could represent or symbolize.

Some also think that FACE may be literal in that it represents an actual person's face, possibly even Madotsuki's exaggerated interpretation of her own face due to uncertainty about her physical appearance. a|

The effect eggs, all dropped in the Nexus.

    The Jump.png
    The ending credits.

When the 'interact' key is pressed again, the screen will slowly fade to black and the player will return to the title screen. a| While Madotsuki's suicide in the ending is sudden, it is possible that the events of the ending were already considered by Madotsuki as shown by various aspects of her dream world which seemingly foreshadow her jumping from the balcony.

They could also be interpreted as humans in the real world spectating what happened to her, appearing as monsters. a|

    |none|135x101px|Yume Nikki:Ending]]
  • [[File:Yn-aztecrave.png When Madotsuki interacts with the "Rave Box", the screen fades to black, and an animation of a strange monkey-like design resembling Aztec- or Paracas-style art appears. It constantly cycles through various "states" very quickly as a lively synth beat plays. Unsuspecting players are likely to be taken aback by the sudden explosion of vibrant color that stands in stark contrast to the bland hues of the Wilderness area. The animation continues until it is dismissed by the player.

Individual slides of the Aztec Rave Monkey animation can also be seen in the scrolling parallax backgrounds of other worlds. A red and yellow frame appears as the background of Forest World and a black and white, slightly blurred, frame appears as the background of Block World. a| There are numerous instances of indigenous imagery blended with postmodern art styles throughout Yume Nikki, including the KALIMBA TV channel, the Nexus's floor pattern, the paintings in Mural World, and various parallax backgrounds (such as the ones of Shield-Folk World and Eyeball World) of which the Aztec Rave Monkey is probably the most popular among fans.

A frame from the FACE animation.

Location: The Stairway in Number World

Prompt: There is a 1/8 chance per dream session that a Zippertile in the southeastern corner of Number World will have a sad expression with an open mouth instead of a smiling expression. Stabbing the Zippertile with the Knife will cause it to bleed and rip open, leading to the Stairway. Upon heading right in this new area, Madotsuki will encounter KyuuKyuu-kun and a door that is identical to the one in her room. Open the door to trigger the event.

Description: Upon opening the door, the screen will slowly fade to black and FACE will slowly begin fading in as a loud droning noise plays. FACE rapidly flashes between multiple different colors as the droning noise gets longer. They can not be dismissed until watched for a full ten seconds, to which then a rushing noise plays as Madotsuki suddenly awakens and leaves her bed.

    Madotsuki melts down.

Location: The Blazing Corridor, in Underground World

Prompt: 1/5 for each bed that takes you to Staircase of Hands.

While in Snow World, turn into a snowman by using the Hat and Scarf effect. As a snowman, sleep in a bed (the Snow World bed being the closest) and, if the chance is successful, Madotsuki will be taken to Staircase of Hands. Walk down the staircase and continue left in Underground World. Once you have reached the flames of the Blazing Corridor, stand as close to the flames as possible. The snow of the Yuki-onna effect cannot be used as it will stay active and put out the fire.

Description: After some time, the heat from the flames will begin to melt Madotsuki. First, she will turn short and still be allowed to move around, although standing there for longer will turn her into a puddle of water with the Hat and Scarf sitting on top. After turning into a puddle, Madotsuki will simply turn back to normal while wearing the Hat and Scarf effect.

Location: Poniko's House, in the Pink Sea

Prompt: 1/64 chance of occurring when Madotsuki switches off the lights in Poniko's House, with a 5-second cooldown which may be circumvented by leaving and re-entering the room.

Description: When the event is triggered, there will be a brief flash of light.

Six UFOs attracted to the summit.

Location: The Martian Summit on Mars

Prompt: 1/4 chance of appearing when Madotsuki meows with the Cat effect on the Martian Summit.

The only way to leave this area is to either pinch Madotsuki awake or use the Medamaude effect. a| Due to the unique nature of the Uboa event, it is largely believed to hold some significance to an event that may have happened in the real world involving Madotsuki.

The common interpretation of the Nuppeppō's appearance, a pale creature with a large and wrinkly head, could also somewhat match Uboa in description, especially with their altered appearance in Uboa's Trap. a|

NASU, showing its standing, jumping and eggplant-head sprites.
    A typical NASU game.

It is possible to get an additional 1,000 bonus points by catching a normal and bonus eggplant at the same time. a| By performing a button combination nearly identical to the Konami Code (left, left, right, right, up, down, up, down) in NASU's title screen, the player character's head is replaced with an eggplant. Doing this greatly improves the chances of a bonus eggplant appearing. While this is likely a reference to the Konami Code, it may also refer to Kid Icarus for the Famicom, where some enemies transform the player into an eggplant with legs.

Playing NASU with this trick enabled will not update your high-score after losing. a| A fully playable online version made by a fan was published on Newgrounds:

a| As NASU is one of the few activities Madotsuki can partake in while in the real world, it is very likely to have some effect on her dreams.

The game's mainly red palette could possibly affect Madotsuki's dreams.

This would alternately suggest that the game is set around the time of its release, and that because Madotsuki never leaves her home, the Famicom represents when she began staying indoors. a|
