==Map Assessment Grading Template==
We are currently creating a tracking system to assess and track maps, and sort them by quality, as to give direction and focus on what to work on for improving the wiki's maps. Documentation of assessment criteria can be found [[YumeWiki:World Map Assessment|here]].
The idea is to create a template or templates that will permanently attach one of these letter grades and a matching tracking category (e.g. A-grade maps, B-grade maps, etc.) to every file being used as a map, along with notes and suggestions for improvement. The letter grade will be adjusted as the map improves. This way we don't need to have a massive active tracking page that needs constant maintenance and that could potentially cause edit conflicts.
Figuring out who should attach these assessment templates remains to be discussed.

Current goals Completed goals

Writing goals on this page can help other editors know what is planned.

Almost all edits to the wiki can be made without prior discussion or permission. This page should only be seen as a list of suggested work. Feel free to change the goals here yourself, or discuss them in the talk page.

Do not delete goals and move them instead to the archive.

Stubs

The article stubs need to be written to a basic level.

These bars show finished articles / total articles. The total number of articles is the number present in the wiki's category, including all subcategories.

Main page menu icons

All wikis have menu icons (sometimes called "buttons" or "banners") that make navigation easier for readers.

  • There are no templates for menu icons, such as a Main Page menu icon template.
  • There is no style guide for banners, though editors can naturally assume they should use the same resolution.
  • There is no standard for how menu icons should be named.
  • There is some variation in how they are styled (how the whole container div is styled, whether the icons themselves the MenuIcon class, etc.).
  • There is no easy way to download an isolated frame of any wiki's style
  • There is no information available on the font used by each wiki.

An effort should be made to facilitate:

  1. Making new menu icons for new wikis.
  2. Making new menu icons for existing wikis which have an existing style.
  3. Keeping a record of which menu icons have been made, and which could be added to existing wikis (in other words, which are missing from each wiki)

An archive of menu icon templates was made by User:NadaAfterwards and shared to the wiki discord: [1]. A table of current menu icons of each namespace was made by User:Uksi: [2]. The table is also available below for everyone to edit.

Menu icon resources

Make a publicly available version of the resources currently only available on the Yume Wiki Discord channel.

File categorization

All files should end up categorized under Category:Files. This includes categorizing unused files under Category:File maintenance using {{UnusedFile}}.

File categorization progress:

1196 / 39071 (3%)

Firstly, some preparation must be done:

  1. A proposition for which file categories to create and which files should be present in those categories must be written to keep a clear intention from the beginning.
    • E.g. should annotated maps be put in an "Annotated Maps" category, a normal "Maps" category, or both at the same time?
    • Categories have implications on the results of SMW and DPL.
  2. Removing files from categories left over from Fandom, such as Category:Maps and Category:Images. This frees up the categories for new usage in Yume Wiki, while making sure the files don't get counted as categorized when they haven't been reviewed and updated.
  3. New possible details for {{Infobox file}} should be designed as soon as possible (see below for some suggestions). Adding these later might require reviewing already categorized files, which is a lot of extra work!

Notices

There may be a need for more notice templates.

There are some notices in YNFG Wiki that also need to be considered.

Hatnotes are not yet supported, which is potentially a limitation. Some pages link to main articles by making the header a link, which in other wikis is forbidden and requires the use of {{main}} instead. Existing hatnote templates (regardless of whether they actually function) are still in the notice templates category.

Usage of existing notices
{{Stub}} Short articles that need more content.
{{Cleanup}} Articles with multiple issues that need extensive rewriting to bring up to wiki standards. Also used for extreme cases where articles need complete rewrites. Do not use for articles that can be fixed in a single reasonable-duration editing session. In cases like this, consider fixing the article yourself. Tells the reader that the article generally isn't very good and creates a list of pages that need serious help for editors.
{{Cleanup2}} Used for images that are not compliant with Style Guide policies that need to be replaced. Also used for maps. Helps keep track of images with problems.
{{MissingInfo}} Articles generally missing some information.
{{Delete}} Requesting a page to be deleted entirely from the wiki.
{{CategorySetting}} Used for templates that place a category, and places templates with the notice in Category:Category setting templates.
{{PropertySetting}} Used for templates that add SMW properties or subobjects, and places templates with the notice in Category:Property setting templates.
{{Claim}} Supposedly to mark pages as being edited to avoid edit conflicts. Never actually used by anyone and has an outdated structure.
Quarantined Fangame pages that have stricter rules on what to write about due to author request. Currently quarantined pages are locked to admins and are forbidden from having download links. Otherwise they are the same as other pages.
{{SpoilerWarning}} Used in spoiler-heavy pages such as about game endings, out of courtesy for the reader.
HorrorWarning Warns the reader of content that is more gore-y or horrific than usual.
NotReleased Fangames that are not yet released. Tells the reader not to expect much.
NotReleased2 Fangames abandoned before releasing. Tells the reader not to expect much... ever.
ExFangame Fangame pages that should not be updated further. Different from archival as editors are still encouraged to update the page's information and style — just not with information on the game's later versions, after it stopped being a YNFG.

Plans:

Italic titles

A Community discussion from November to December 2024 had the consensus among the 3 only participants be to always write title in italics. As of March 24th, 2025 the revised style guide now states that when refering to the title of a work, the title should be italicized except for song titles and short stories.

In page text: There is no way to search specifically for un-italicised game titles in page text, although searching for all mentions of the game title and checking those could be done by someone with that kind of time (please write which game titles you've checked though!)

In page titles: Templates need to be created that make use of {{DISPLAYTITLE:}} to place page names in italics. It should omit text in parentheses. It also needs to be able to omit other words, such as in the case of content categories like Category:Yume Nikki Locations. There's a possibility of it forcing the namespace to always appear to readers, which is an implication that would need fixing (probably by asking an admin to set $wgRestrictDisplayTitle to false).

Possible exceptions:

  • The title could be left normal in the wiki's main page welcome banner.
  • Maintenance pages or categories do not especially need to have proper formatting, as they are supposed to be used by editors and not seen by readers.

Dotflow map names

While adding romanizations and translations to the Japanese name entries in .flow's infoboxes, a descrepancy was discovered in the name of a map. The Young Passage's name appears to be a mistranslation of 青通路 ("Blue Passage"), the name used on the Japanese .flow atwiki. 青 is a word that can mean "young", but in this case is most likely a description of the map's color scheme, which is light blue.

Upon further investigation, the name appears to have arisen as part of a sweeping change in the original .flow wikidot to change many (but not all) location names to be translations of the names on the Japanese atwiki. The bulk of the changes occurred in 2019 and deprecated several names that had been in use by the English fandom for many years. Most of the translations are either correct or close enough to correct, but Young Passage stands out as a fairly egregious mistranslation.

The issue is compounded by the .flow official soundtrack listing several English and Japanese location names in its tracklist that differ from both the translated atwiki names and, obviously, the older English fan names that preceded them. Notably, even some of the Japanese names differ from the Japanese fan names.

While this issue can be rolled into other efforts to renovate the .flow wiki, which is in bad need of information updates and cleanup, it is worth considering what to do about this unusual naming issue, as there are at least three different English naming conventions in use (English fandom, translated Japanese fandom, and the OST English translations) and two different Japanese naming conventions (Japanese fandom, OST).

There are currently five possible options, each with its own concerns:

  • Do nothing at all. This is the easiest, for obvious reasons. However, it does leave the issue of Young Passage standing as a mistranslated name unresolved.
  • Change Young Passage's name to Blue Passage. This is the change with the least amount of friction, as only one page's namespace will be affected. The strange inconsistency of older English and newer translated English names is unresolved here.
  • Revert all changed names back to their original English name before they were displaced by Japanese names. This approach will preserve the traditional names that took precedence over the translated names and had existed for much longer before being displaced by foreign ones. However, many namespaces will be affected by this approach and it will require some archaeology in the wikidot to achieve; additonally, some older English fan names might not be accurate descriptions.
  • Change English names to match soundtrack titles. This approach will make the English names of .flow's location's match the "offical" translations. It will affect multiple namespaces. However, some of the names may only refer to track names, which might be used in multiple places, and notably, Japanese names would have to be updated as well.
  • Change all English names to be translations of the Japanese atwiki names. This approach finishes what the .flow wikidot started and finishes the realignment to the Japanese fandom's names. It will affect more namespaces than any other approach.

If names are going to be changed, we need to make sure we coordinate with the YNO team so we don't break anything.

Map Assessment Grading Template

We are currently creating a tracking system to assess and track maps, and sort them by quality, as to give direction and focus on what to work on for improving the wiki's maps. Documentation of assessment criteria can be found here.
