References and Allusions to Yume Nikki in Yume 2kki

Last edited: November 3rd, 2024

Catalog of potential references and allusions to Yume Nikki in Yume 2kki (tho some are officially confirmed or unmistakable). Focused mainly on worlds that strongly resemble or seemingly reference specific ones in YN. Mostly just for fun. Loosely based off of the Yume 2kki:Yume Nikki page, with some text directly coming from there or assorted Trivia sections. Thanks to Oh0kaYthen86 and WikiOdd for the suggestions.

Galleries are sorted alphabetically with YN worlds first, then 2kki worlds second. Worlds currently without an image of their resemblance will have a placeholder instead.

Block World

Candle World

Checkered Tile Path

  • Several areas are made up isometric tiled paths with a similar style to Checkered Tile Path.
    • Notably, Closet Pinwheel Path is directly themed around closets like the one Closet Madotsuki is found in.

Closet Madotuski

  • Closet Pinwheel Path has a running theme of closets similar to Closet Madotsuki's (as mentioned in the section above). An isolated hidden area with a ghostly Urotsuki can be accessed from the Netherworld, paralleling how the original closet is only accessible from Lamp World.
  • The Haunted Cabinet in Nostalgic House contains a decapitated woman in the fetal position hidden inside, similar to finding Closet Madotsuki in the closet.
  • One of the rooms in Shadow Lady Estate has a wardrobe containing Urotsuki in a similar manner.

Pyramid

Dark World

  • Dark Museum starts initially dark and requires the Lantern effect to properly see, similar to Dark World.
  • Obsidian Plains also requires the lantern and has several drawings made up of floor tiles like Dark World does.
  • While not requiring the lantern, Darkwoven Void is also modeled after Dark World and has floor drawings similar to it.

Dense Woods A Surgical Scissors World

Dense Woods B & Witch's Island

  • Several forest areas in Yume 2kki appear to be modeled after Dense Woods B and Witch's Island. Their specific style of silhouette treelines is paralleled by the majority of these areas.

Shitai-san

Docks

  • Yume 2kki's own Docks, Rice Field, and Streetlight Docks resemble Yume Nikki's Docks. Like the original, these areas all have anglular, maze-like pathways over water as their main theme and design.
    • Forest Pier contains a Docks-like section with these elements as well.
    • Streetlight Docks has a fishing NPC similar to the Docks' Fisherman.
  • Nightfall Park has a small subsection resembling the Docks, which also contains a Strober-esque NPC. (see below section)

Strober

Eyeball World

  • Broken Faces Area and Vomiting Mouths World have pairs of faces that directly parallel a set of Pier Monsters in Eyeball World.
  • A Pier Monster-esque creature named Bethany can be found in Cement World.

Severed Blue Head

Face Carpet Plaza

  • Sparkling Dimension A, the intial area of Clawtree Forest, and Wooded Lakeside B's Gnarled Tree Plaza all resemble Face Carpet Plaza.
    • Notably, Gnarled Tree Plaza features Shimako wearing a big hat, who uncharacteristically chases down Urotsuki in the manner of a Shadow Lady. If she "catches" her, she'll put the hat on her head and run away, rather than trap her in a dead end. Her inclusion in this area puts her in a similar role to the Toriningen chaser that can be found in Face Carpet Plaza.

Famicom Worlds

FC Dungeon

FC House & Basement

FC World A & B

  • A now inaccesible room in GB Fields contained totems similar to those found in FC World B.

Lizardman

Concept

  • While not visually similar to the FC Worlds, several other worlds in Yume 2kki share the concept of a retro game world with an artstyle shift with them. Notably, these have their own different styles, which are as follows:

Forest World

  • Several forest areas in Yume 2kki resemble Forest World. Namely similar wide open spaces and angular rows of trees are used in these worlds.
    • Evergreen Woods starts in an open section resembling Forest World before trailing off to more linear paths.

Namekuji

Footprint Path

  • Pansy Path's appearance is loosely reminiscent of the Footprint Path, consisting of multi-colored pansies that are vaguely similar to the Floyags above a path of small black and white ones.
  • City of Liars contains its own version of the Footprint Path that connects to Nightfall Park.
  • Butterfly Sector's White Lily Path is also reminiscent of Footprint Path, being made up of small white flowers on a black background.

Goppa

  • The Bloody Passage in Ahogeko's House has a dark room with a Goppa-like creature dipping its tail in a pool of water. Chainsawing the creature's tail will grant Menu Theme #38 and light up the room, revealing its huge pained expression.
  • Emerald Cave contains a yellow, grinning creature that somewhat resembles a Goppa.
  • Foliage Estate also has a large Goppa styled creature, with a small bulb on its side that can be hit to inflict pain.

Ghost World

Graffiti World

  • Several areas in Yume 2kki resemble Graffiti World, either being voids made up of spreads of abstract tiles or having sections of them. Like the original, most of these tiles also make noise when stepped on and form larger pictures when viewed from above.

Guillotine World

  • Acerola World is very conceptually similar to Guillotine World, as both are small looping areas housing an effect, several chasers, holes in the floor, and an ambiguous exit.
  • House of Vases contains a door design depicting the Guillotine's face.[1]

Hell & Mini Hell

  • Intestines Maze resembles Hell, being a large winding maze with animated borders, multiple world connections, and several chasers present.
  • Oriental Pub resembles Hell, being a large black and red maze. It also contains two red spinning 3D cubes that look and function like Nenrikido.
    • Prior to version 0.114h, this area used a neon shade of red closer to Hell's.
  • Omurice Labyrinth resembles Hell, being a bright red and yellow extremely complicated maze.
  • Static Noise Hell, Oblique Hell, and 3D Underworld (which reuses the previous world's map turned upside down) are all directly visually based on Hell.
    • All also contain a formation in the shape of some sort of shield figure wielding a staff, which directly originates from Yume Nikki's original Hell maze.
    • The center of Oblique Hell also somewhat resembles a Henkei Shita, one of which can be found in the original Hell.
    • The crossroad where Urotsuki starts off in Static Noise Hell is reminiscent of Mini Hell, complete with a transparent Urotsuki standing in the center.

KALIMBA

NASU

  • The unlockable FUJI minigame is likely a direct homage to NASU. According to Japanese traditions, dreaming of Mt. Fuji, a hawk and an eggplant on the first night of a new year is considered to be a sign of good luck. FUJI features Mt. Fuji itself, as well as hawks, while NASU features eggplants, thus complementing one another.

  • The music that plays during the Madotsuki's Room event in the Never-Ending Hallway (see main section) appears to be a distorted version of NASU's BGM.

  • A doll resembling the main character can be found in Edith's knitting basket in Decrepit Village.

Mall

  • The Music Box Creature on the couch in Bottom Garden resembles O-Man.
  • The room with the Menu Theme #23 in Blob Desert is similar to the part of E-Man's Room with the menu theme Toriningen.

  • Space contains several real photos of planets in a similar manner to Mars, including a playground on the Moon that shares a similar angle to the original.

Mural World

Neon Tile Path

Neon World

Nexus

  • The Second Nexus is very reminiscent of Yume Nikki's Nexus, having a traditional layout made of doors.

Effect Eggs

  • The Child effect can be found in a large egg in Hourglass Desert's Pyramid Maze with Urotsuki's shirt pattern on it, similar to the effect eggs Madotsuki can drop in the Nexus.
  • Several worlds by Wataru and noildoof contain large eggs that give Menu Themes and are similar to the effect eggs.
  • The Hat-Nexus in Critter Village contains presents with the hats from qxy's worlds arranged in a manner similar to the effect eggs.

Number World

  • Several worlds in Yume 2kki are very similar to Number World in terms of design.
  • House of Vases contains doors depicting a face found on one of Number World's walls and a red Wheelie respectively.[1]

FACE

  • The Wardrobe Face event in Board Game Islands is a direct reference to the original FACE event
    • In addition, the face-like door which triggers the event seems to take inspiration from the scrapped FACEtile door found in the files of older versions, as it opens in a similar manner.

ああああああああ Event

  • An あ can be found on the wall in Cipher Keyboard where the grave accent key would be on a standard QWERTY keyboard.
  • One of several pieces of text Glitch Hell can change Urotsuki's name and status in the menu to is "ああああああ".
  • Graffiti Passage contains a section covered with あ's. At the end of it is a single red あ that floods the area with more of them and adds a red tint to the screen.
  • While navigating Kaprekar Number Zone there's a random chance that there will be a red cube in one of the dead-ends. Interacting with it will trap Urotsuki into an inescapable area with a flood of glitched red numbers.
  • If text events are on, Monochrome Mansion's Monochrome Fields contains several buildings with red あ's on them.
    • Additionally, a schoolgirl NPC can be found here that will trap Urotsuki in an isolated area filled with the same あ's if chainsawed.
  • A room on the top floor of Monochrome School contains a chalkboard filled with あ's overlooking frantically moving girl trapped behind desks and chairs.
  • Red Black World contained a set of red tiles with 死 (shi, death) on them. Walking onto the middle of the tiles trapped Urotsuki in an area full of 死 similar to the あ event.
  • Channel #6 in the TV Room features a shadowy Urotsuki with a bloodied chainsaw over a scrolling background of bright red あ's.
  • In Underground Runological Warehouse, graffiti of the hiragana character わ (wa) can be found in one of the rooms. Equipping the Chainsaw or Marginal effects will transform it into a red あ.
  • Seishonen's room in Urotsuki's Dream Apartments contains a paper that displays various red hirigana, which are each tied to specific ranges of variable #44. When said range is between 0 and 61, an あ will be shown.

KyuuKyuu-kun

  • House of Vases contains a door depicting KyuuKyuu-kun.[1]
  • A small slime-like creature with colors similar to KyuuKyuu-kun can be found by the entrance to the Red Sewers.

Stabbing Room

  • House of Vases contains mask-like creatures on poles that resemble the face on the floor of the Stabbing Room.

Pink Sea

  • Several areas resemble Pink Sea, featuring similar water and rock formations. Often these will have "shoal" as part of their English names.
    • Cones like those near Poniko's House are also common in these areas, also appearing in otherwise unrelated worlds like Abyssal Garden and Illusive Forest.

Poniko's House

  • Candlelit Factory has a small room where interacting with a bloodstain on the wall will turn the lights on and off like Poniko's lightswitch. After using it a certain amount of times, the NPCs in the room will slowly be replaced with bloodstains and a door will appear.
  • Seishonen in Urotsuki's Dream Apartments resembles Poniko, having a similar sprite and eye type. There's a 1/31 chance that the room will glitch out upon entering, similar to randomly getting the Uboa event when flicking the lightswitch.

Shield-Folk World

  • Shield Owl World greatly resembles Shield-Folk World, featuring similar figures.

Sewers

Big Red

  • In addition to resembling the Sewers, Abandoned Factory has an event where Urotsuki is eaten by a large red monster, similar to Big Red, and taken to a dark world with pinwheels and a multicolored panorama, similar to Windmill World.

Big Red Abandoned Factory

  • Interacting with a red NPC in Streetlight Docks will show a close up of them that resembles Big Red. This event essentially plays out the opposite of Big Red's. The NPC is shown with its mouth closed and Urotsuki inside. Using the chainsaw will cause it to open its mouth, letting her access an isolated section of Angler's Depths.

Sewer Drawings

  • A wall in Mini-Maze contains graffiti with a style similar to the drawings in the Sewer.
  • Red Nail Passage contains abstract drawings viewed in the same manner as the ones in the Sewer. Interacting with a hole in a wall will cause the picture to "expand" out towards the screen.

Sky Garden

  • A section of Glowing Tree Path has a realistic scene of a distant city where two UFOs chase each other in the sky above, likely in reference to the similar cliffside area in Sky Garden.

Madotsuki

  • Like most fangame protagonists, Urotsuki's sprite is directly styled after Madotsuki's.
    • One prototype design for Urotsuki more closely resembles Madotsuki, notably having short pigtails and a pink/red outfit. This design and a couple others can be found as masks in Binding Site.
  • Most of the rooms of the Dressing Room have an unreachable mannequin in the center bearing the window from Madotsuki's shirt.
  • The secret room in Hourglass Desert's Pyramid Maze containing the Child effect contains a rug which depicts the window pattern worn on Madotsuki's shirt. The same area plays a cover of the menu theme of Yume Nikki and has a character that somewhat resembles Madotsuki herself on the wall, holding a sign depicting the window pattern.
  • Darkwoven Void contains a set of tiles that form the window pattern found on Madotsuki's shirt.
